Klaas-Jan Huntelaar an Arsenal Target?

With the idea of signing Luka Podolski moving to England to play alongside Robin van Persie every other week at the Emirates out of the window, Arsenal are now being linked with Schalke's Dutch striker, Klass-Jan Huntelaar.

Arsenal are known to be in the market for a striker this January thanks to the African Cup of Nations inconveniently removing two attackers from their squad in Chamakh and Gervinho, and despite being close to signing former player and Arsenal legend, Thierry Henry, the rumours continue to flow.

Huntelaar, the 28 year-old Dutchman has been heavily linked to Arsenal and Manchester United almost every transfer window for the past 3 or 4 years so to many, this rumour will come as no surprise, but Arsenal's current situation adds weight to speculation that Huntelaar may be prepared for a move to England at last.

The player has been exceptional for his German club side Schalke this season, scoring  a brilliant 26 goals in 26 games, surely meaning there would be little reason why he would want to end such a good run of form for his club by moving to England with Arsenal other than ambition or a change in scenery. His contract expires in the summer of 2013, and so links to top clubs are inevitably growing, however he has recently moved to end speculation of a transfer, saying of interest from Manchester United late in December:

"I know nothing of alleged interest from Manchester United. I will not even speculate, I am concentrating fully on Schalke."

"I'll let any offers come to me quietly and will then see what happens. This is the attitude I've always had. My contract runs until the summer of 2013. If they [Schalke] want to talk, I'll gladly listen."
Arsenal will apparently have to spend £15 million for his signature - a small price to pay for some reliable, goal-getting back-up and a possible long-term partner to Robin van Persie. Thierry Henry will be with Arsenal for two months which will deal with the short term problem of players missing on international duty, but Huntelaar could prove a steal for Arsene Wenger over the next few years.

The signing would certainly be an impressive one if Arsene Wenger could pull it off, but at he moment, going by his excellent form in Germany and how well he has settled there, as well as his comments on any potential move, a transfer to Arsenal does seem to me, unlikely.
