Mancini keen on Ibrahimovic

Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini could attempt to sign Zlatan Ibrahimovic this summer as he builds a squad to compete in the Champions League.

Having secured fourth place in the Premier League after a 1-0 win over Tottenham on Tuesday night, City are already looking ahead to next season.

And with uncertainty surrounding the future of Carlos Tevez, and Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko not making much of an impact since his move from Wolfsburg in January, a striker could be a target.

Ibrahimovic is currently on loan at Serie A champions Milan from Barcelona and the Swede has said he wants to stay at the San Siro, but a City bid could change the situation.

Mancini, who won the Italian title with the 29-year-old at Inter, said in The Sun: "If Zlatan wants to come to City, I would immediately find him a place."

There has also been speculation about Balotelli, a £24m signing from Inter last August, amid suggestions that the Italian is homesick.

But Mancini, who left the 20-year-old as an unused substitute against Tottenham, said: "He will definitely stay. Mario is an ongoing bet.

"He has shown he has all the right qualities, but needs to do more, much more, to give a sense to his talent."

With qualification for the Champions League assured, Mancini can now turn his attention to Saturday's FA Cup final against Stoke City on Saturday.

"Our target at the start of the season was to qualify for the Champions League and reach a big final - so we have managed to do that," added Mancini.

"As I said when I arrived, in two or three years, Manchester City can become one of the top clubs in Europe. We have everything you need to do this.

"Now we must think of the weekend. This latest win will give us a lift for Saturday."

Mancini hits back at critics

Roberto Mancini
Roberto Mancini has responded to critics of Manchester City's transfer policy, claiming his Premier League rivals have also spent big and that City are looking to develop a squad of young players.

Mancini believes City are being unfairly criticised for their spending following the takeover by Sheik Mansour two-and-a-half years ago.

He added: "Many times I've been asked about our spending but we didn't buy Cristiano Ronaldo, (Lionel) Messi. We bought young players, good players.

"All these players need to improve because it's the first year they're playing in the Barclays Premier League. If I'm not mistaken, many years ago when fantastic players came to England, like (Eric) Cantona, at the start it was difficult.''

But he added: "The manager, I think, needs time because, in one year, you can't build a strong team. It's important that you improve every week.''

City reached the FA Cup final on Saturday at the expense of arch-rivals Manchester United and in doing so, Mancini believes they have overcome a huge psychological barrier.

Mancini said: "Our mentality will be more strong because we beat United - and United played with their best team. (They were) without (Wayne) Rooney, but we played without (Carlos) Tevez. You can win against them only if you play very strong, you play very concentrated. If not, it's a difficult day. They win because they have more experience. But now, if we work, we can arrive very, very close to them.

"The final will be harder because probably we will go in the final and we are favourite. In 90 minutes, anything can happen. If we play with the same spirit, we can win. If not, we don't win.''

United fans have a well-known banner at Old Trafford which is updated every year City go without winning a trophy. It recently ticked around to 35 years and Mancini said: "They can take off this banner. We hope we can take it off this year.''

Roberto Mancini Glad Wayne Rooney Ruled Out Of FA Cup Semi-Final

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini is reportedly happy that Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has been ruled out of next weekend’s FA Cup semi-final.

The FA yesterday upheld Rooney’s two-game ban for swearing into a TV camera – so he misses the clash with local rivals City.

And City boss Mancini said: “At this moment Rooney is not 100 per cent, he is playing at 200 per cent.

“But if he can’t play, okay! We know he can change a game at any moment like when we played at Old Trafford this year.

“That day we deserved to draw or to win and Rooney scored a fantastic goal.”

However Mancini insisted that Sir ALex’s side will still be a force to fear in next Saturday’s Wembley clash.

He said: “United is a strong team, even without Rooney.

“Will it improve our chances? No, I don’t think that. I still think it will be a very good game without Rooney.”
