Steven Taylor headed Newcastle to Premier League safety as ten-man Birmingham’s woes increased with a 2-1 defeat at St James’ Park.

The Carling Cup winners had defender Liam Ridgewell controversially dismissed for deliberate handball ten minutes before the break to spark a madcap and ultimately decisive flurry of activity.

Shola Ameobi converted the resulting penalty to give the Magpies the advantage and when Taylor powered home a second from Joey Barton’s corner, the game looked to be over. However, Lee Bowyer marked his return to Tyneside with a 45th-minute strike, which went in off Fabricio Coloccini’s leg, to give the visitors hope.

But the margin of victory would have been far greater had it not been for the heroics of City keeper Ben Foster, who made stunning saves from Peter Lovenkrands, Nile Ranger and Kevin Nolan twice to keep his side in it to the whistle.

Victory took Newcastle to 44 points and left Birmingham on 39 and while the former can now start planning for next season, there is still work to be done for the West Midlanders.

Carragher, captaining the side in the absence of Steven Gerrard, was knocked unconscious in a clash of heads with young full-back John Flanagan during Sunday’s draw at Arsenal.

Birmingham will be boosted by the return from injury of central defender Martin Jiranek for the trip to Anfield.
The Czech Republic international has missed the last three games with a groin injury and abdominal complaint.
But he has returned to training and Blues manager Alex McLeish has confirmed he will be part of the squad to travel to Anfield.
Jiranek had formed an effective partnership with Roger Johnson after the loss of Scott Dann for the second half of the campaign with a hamstring injury.

Carlo Ancelotti’s decision to leave out Fernando Torres paid off as Florent Malouda and Salomon Kalou fired Chelsea up to second in the Premier League with a 3-1 home win over Birmingham.

The champions beat Birmingham to become Manchester United’s closest challengers, moving to within six points of the leaders and giving themselves a glimmer of hope of retaining their crown.

Once again looking far more comfortable in their tried-and-trusted 4-3-3 formation, Malouda and Kalou scored brilliant first-half goals, and the former struck again before Sebastian Larsson netted a consolation from the penalty spot.

Chelsea therefore capitalised on United’s failure to win at Newcastle yesterday and, with a trip to Old Trafford to come, there is a slim chance they could yet snatch the title.

Ancelotti Wants Fernando Torres To Score Against Birmingham City

Carlo Ancelotti insists has declared that he is not fazed by the current form trough of £50million striker Fernando Torres.

The Spanish international striker has failed to score since arriving at Stamford Bridge from Liverpool at the end of January and his plight has been well-documented.

However the Chelsea manager says that the form of one player is not his focus ahead of tomorrow night’s home clash with Birmingham City.

The former AC Milan boss told Sky Sports News : “I’m not worried about this,”.

“I hope tomorrow (he will score) but my thoughts right now are to put out the best team, to play good football and to win the game.

“He played nine minutes (against West Brom) and he showed character, I liked it. He scored but it was offside.

“He will score. He can score if he plays (against Birmingham). But it doesn’t matter if Fernando or another scores.”
