Rooney & Robin: The Royals at United

With over 25 years of being the seemingly omnipotent driving force behind the biggest club in the world, winning countless trophies including 12 Premier League titles, 5 FA Cups and 2 European Cups, some may afford to decorate the 70 year old Scot, Sir Alex Ferguson with the title of "Football Royalty".

As the long reigning king of Old Trafford, he has overseen the purchase of some fantastic players, moulding teams around them to create world conquerors and the envy of clubs around the world. However, the invasion of Arsenal for last seasons king of goals, Robin van Persie leaves spectators open mouthed and gasping with excitement like no other signing has at Manchester United for quite a few years.

In a valiantly noble move, Sir Alex Ferguson has handed over £24 million in the hope that the Premier League trophy will return to the red side of Manchester as opposed to the blue half where it currently resides for the first time. Many will hold a great hope and now probably an expectation more than anything, that the two Princes of the Premier League last season, Rooney and van Persie, can lead a United side to glory against a well matched strike-force at City.

Rooney and van Persie scored an astonishing 72 goals between them last season, with the now former Arsenal striker leading the Premier League's top goalscorers list followed closely by his new team-mate, Rooney. Together, their partnership could be outrageously destructive and remarkably ruthless, being as devastating to opposition defences as Robin van Persie's sale is to the mental state of famous Arsenal fan Piers Morgan.

While Dimitar Berbatov, the Prince of Perfection prepares to part ways with United, he will leave knowing that with Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez all ahead of him in the pecking order in a new fast-paced dynamic and in-depth attacking force, there was little he could do to reserve a place in this very competitive team.

Few clubs could afford to let go of a player who cost over £30 million without a fight, especially when he scored 56 goals in four supposedly unsuccessful seasons. Manchester United can.

Few clubs could boast the attacking prowess and quality of Rooney and van Persie, Welbeck and Hernandez, who between them have managed 363 goals during their time in England. United can.

And few teams clubs could spend money on such players safe in the knowledge that they have one of the greatest managers in the business, guiding them and helping them settle down at the playground of greats; the Theatre of Dreams. United can.

Last season United's League title was lost by the sheer fact that not enough goals were scored. With the stunning strike-force at their disposal this season, on paper, that shouldn't be a problem, and United's reign on English football may just well resume shortly.

Rooney Would Welcome Sneijder Signing

When Wayne Rooney signed a new five year contract back in October of 2010, he said he was "delighted" to be staying at the club where he belongs. He was probably also rather pleased with the amount of money he would be taking home each week, as he had been then made Manchester United's top earner with a reported wage of something above £200,000 per week.

Manchester United have been linked to a player reportedly demanding more than Rooney's mammoth wages in Wesley Sneijder, and it had been said in numerous speculative reports that Rooney was uncomfortable with a player earning more than him. That to me sounds extremely egotistical and selfish of the English striker, and it is something I wouldn't really expect from him, so I was pleased to hear that Rooney would in fact welcome Sneijder to United, no matter what his wages would be.
A source close to Rooney said:

"It's nonsense to suggest Wayne would ever stop Manchester United signing a player like Wesley Sneijder because he wants to stay the top-paid player at Old Trafford; its absolutely not true. In fact, it's just the reverse. He’s happy to see United sign any world-class player to improve the club's chances of success."

"What other players earn when they join United is of no concern to Wayne. He is happy with his own situation at the club. Wayne is committed to seeing Manchester United improve at every level, which is why he signed on for five more years last season."
Indeed, despite the questionable demands from Sneijder about his wages, it should be of no concern to any other players what they earn per week. For a player to be against a club signing another player because they would exceed their own wages is quite frankly ridiculous to me, especially when we are talking about the already massive sums of money they are being paid.

While Rooney may support the Sneijder signing, Sir Alex Ferguson's latest comments to "forget" United signing Sneijder seems to rule out the signing, unfortunately for the majority of Manchester United fans, who find Sneijder as the perfect replacement for Paul Scholes.

Rooney a doubt for Manchester United

Ferguson concern for RooneyManchester United will assess Wayne Rooney's hamstring injury ahead of the Champions League clash with Schalke, but there are doubts that the striker will be fit for Wednesday's semi-final second leg encounter.

Better news for United comes with the confirmation from United boss, Sir Alex Ferguson, that Darren Fletcher, who has not played for two months, will be involved at some point in the game.

Rooney scored in the 2-0 win in the first leg a week ago, but after missing training on Tuesday morning, could miss out at Old Trafford as United look to tie up a place in the final.

Sir Alex Ferguson had already suggested Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen will start against Schalke, and will give Rooney a fitness test on the day of the game.

"No, he didn't train," said the United manager.

"He had a tight hamstring so we left him today, but we'll see what he's like tomorrow."

Ferguson added: "Darren Fletcher will play part of the game tomorrow night. He's working hard and he'll be involved."

United are favourites to progress to Wembley after winning the first leg 2-0, but saw their Premier League hopes suffer a setback at the weekend as they lost to Arsenal and saw Chelsea close the gap at the top to three points.

However, Ferguson feels that his side are still favourites to lift the title for a record-breaking 19th time, but they still have plenty of work to do.

He continued: "We must be favourites, only because we're three points ahead but that can evaporate quite quickly as we realised on Sunday.

"We have a big job to do yet. [We have] three games left and as I said last week the drama is not finished."

Best News For Man United Since Rooney Contract

Nemanja Vidic Nemanja Vidic of Manchester United gestures during the FA Cup sponsored by E.ON semi final match between Manchester City and Manchester United at Wembley Stadium on April 16, 2011 in London, England.

Manchester United fans may not be having the best day today. Some will have woken up this morning only to remember the crushing events of the day before - a loss to fierce rivals Manchester City. Other's may have not even woken up this morning, sleeping their sorrows away, blocking out the fact that a treble bid is now over because of their noisy, now deafening neighbours.

So perhaps the words that have come from Nemanja Vidic's mouth will cheer those fans up. He has been talking about his future, a future that has been called into question with rumours about a possible transfer away from Old Trafford. Apparently, his wife had been complaining about life in Manchester, and perhaps the Serbian was starting to listen. Top teams with far hotter weather and slightly more tropical surroundings beckoned; Real Madrid, AC Milan and Barcelona all showing interest, but Vidic has now rubbished those rumours:
“I hope to spend the rest of my career here at United."
“I heard the speculation about me maybe leaving last year, but I know where I want to be and I have shown my commitment to the club.
“I have given the best years of my career to this club and the talk about me leaving here was never correct.
“I always give my best. Of course, sometimes you have good and bad days, but I think I always try to give 100 per cent – and especially now I have that armband and the responsibility that goes with it.
“I'm definitely here for the rest of my career now. It never came from my mouth that I would be leaving United. I love it here and I think I show that on the pitch.”
What great news that is for Manchester United, who have seen Vidic be an unmovable rock at times in the United back four. He has headed out countless attacks, intercepted opposition moves at crucial times and been an inspiring, brave captain for the majority of this injury free season for him. He is undoubtedly a contender for Manchester United's player of the year, and is deservedly on the short-list for the Premier League Player of the Year.

Now it may not have seemed good news at the time, but Wayne Rooney's new contract is certainly up there with Vidic's vocal commitment to United. Rooney became hugely unpopular overnight when he claimed he wanted to move on last summer to a club with more ambition, but then made a miraculous u-turn and signed a renewed contract with United.

A poor start to the season had people questioning Rooney's quality, asking whether his career had already peeked. But as he has since proved, form is temporary, and class is permanent. A good end to the season has seen his form been clawed back, with United looking so much more dangerous when he is floating behind the striker on the pitch in the team. This was highlighted in the derby yesterday when the Englishman was missing against a tough opposition. United suffered in his absence, with it being extremely hard to break down the City defence as they doubled up on pretty much every attacking player.

That wasn't helped by the early departure of Paul Scholes, who is usually provider of that killer pass - a pass that Rooney has proved he is completely capable of.

But United fans can sleep a little easier tonight. Hopefully, they will have gotten over the gut wrenching loss to City, and have their sights on the two trophies that really count now; the Premier League and Champions League. They can do that now with the spirit lifting knowledge that Nemanja Vidic is going nowhere, and Wayne Rooney will be back from suspension. It isn't looking too bad.

Roberto Mancini Glad Wayne Rooney Ruled Out Of FA Cup Semi-Final

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini is reportedly happy that Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has been ruled out of next weekend’s FA Cup semi-final.

The FA yesterday upheld Rooney’s two-game ban for swearing into a TV camera – so he misses the clash with local rivals City.

And City boss Mancini said: “At this moment Rooney is not 100 per cent, he is playing at 200 per cent.

“But if he can’t play, okay! We know he can change a game at any moment like when we played at Old Trafford this year.

“That day we deserved to draw or to win and Rooney scored a fantastic goal.”

However Mancini insisted that Sir ALex’s side will still be a force to fear in next Saturday’s Wembley clash.

He said: “United is a strong team, even without Rooney.

“Will it improve our chances? No, I don’t think that. I still think it will be a very good game without Rooney.”

Rooney ban upheld

Rooney faces ban

Wayne Rooney has lost his appeal against a two-match ban handed down by the Football Association.

Rooney was handed the suspension by the FA after swearing into a television camera following the penalty kick that completed his hat-trick against West Ham.

The striker will miss Saturday's Premier League game against Fulham as well as the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City next weekend.

United decided against contesting the charge itself, with Rooney having already publicly apologised for his behaviour, but they challenged the length of the suspension.

A statement issued by the FA read: "A Regulatory Commission has suspended Manchester United's Wayne Rooney for two matches. Rooney had admitted a charge for the use of offensive, insulting and / or abusive language, but claimed that the automatic penalty of two games was clearly excessive.

"The Commission did not accept the claim and Rooney will begin the standard two match suspension with immediate effect. The charge relates to an incident during his side's fixture with West Ham United at the Boleyn Ground on Saturday 2 April 2011."

Gutted

The 25-year-old issued his statement shortly after the announcement and it added: "I am gutted to miss two matches, one of which is an FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.

"I am not the first player to have sworn on TV and I won't be the last.

"Unlike others who have been caught swearing on camera, I apologised immediately. And yet I am the only person banned for swearing. That doesn't seem right.

"Whatever, I have to accept that what's happened has happened and move on from here. That is what I intend to do."

Manchester United also released a statement in which the club admitted to being "clearly very disappointed".

It continued: "The club put forward a very strong case to have the punishment reduced, which was unsuccessful.

"Wayne Rooney apologised immediately after the match, and the club now wishes to move to on to what hopefully will be a very exciting conclusion to the season."

Witch-hunt

Meanwhile, United skipper Rio Ferdinand has called for an end to the witch-hunt against team-mate Rooney.

"Wayne Rooney swearing on TV, as much as I don't condone it, is not front page news," said Ferdinand.

"We should follow him as a footballer rather than keep lynching him for a lot of the stuff that goes on"

"There are bigger things going on in the world. There are things happening in Libya and Ivory Coast and we are talking about Wayne Rooney on the front page of newspapers because he swore at a camera.

"We should follow him as a footballer rather than keep lynching him for a lot of the stuff that goes on.

"I wouldn't say he is innocent in a lot of the stuff that has happened but sometimes because of who he is the reaction can be over the top."

Watch: Rooney Goal v Chelsea

Wayne Rooney added to his hat-trick against West Ham on the week-end with another vital goal in Manchester United's vital Champions League tie with Chelsea.

It was a brilliantly worked goal with Michael Carrick launching a wonderful cross field pass to Giggs on the left who took a perfect touch, went round his man, and squared it to the awaiting Rooney who placed it onto the post to bounce back into the gaping net.

United then held on, threatening on the counter attack - especially on the wings, occupied in the end by all three of Giggs, Valencia and Nani after Rafael's second half substitution. United were lucky to get away a late penalty call when Evra brought down Rameires in the box, but Torres' desperation to appease the fans saw him dive twice in the box - receiving a booking as a result.

United take a vital lead into the the second leg, and hold that away goal too. And with all the talk about Rooney before the game, after scoring yet another goal, a clear smile was visible on his face - he was happy. It's looking good for both United and Rooney, but this tie is still very much in he balance.

Wayne Rooney Appeals Against Two Match Ban

Reports are out claiming that Wayne Rooney has appealed the FA charge over his F-word rant at West Ham United.

Although the Manchester United striker has accepted the FA charge lodged against his for the foul-mouthed rant into a TV camera at Upton Park on Saturday, he has appealed against the two-match ban that is supposed to accompany it.

The 25 year old England international striker will learn the ruling before tonight’s clash at Chelsea.

“Manchester United player Wayne Rooney has today admitted a charge for the use of offensive, insulting and/or abusive language,” said an FA statement.

“However, Rooney has submitted a claim that the automatic penalty of two games is clearly excessive. A commission will hear the submission tomorrow.

“The charge relates to an incident during his side’s fixture with West Ham United at the Boleyn Ground on Saturday 2 April 2011.”

Wayne Rooney Full Of Praise For Javier Hernandez

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has revealed that there is no chance of teammate Javier Hernandez letting his success go to his head.

The England international striker has admitted that Chicharito is one of the most grounded players he’s come across.

Rooney told the United Review: “He’s just taken it all in his stride.

“He’s a lovely lad, who’s always smiling around the dressing room, and on the pitch he’s been brilliant. You can see he’s got a natural eye for goal, but what’s surprised a lot of us is how good he is in the air. He spends ages practicing after training.”
