Napoli will return to the Champions League next term after earning the point they needed from a 1-1 draw with Internazionale in Serie A.

Napoli finish third in Serie A while Leonardo’s Inter are assured of second spot in the table ahead of next weekend’s final round of matches.

Samuel Eto’o smacked home the opening goal for the visitors from distance on 17 minutes, but a mistake in the Inter defence enabled Juan Zuniga to pounce and stab home the equaliser a minute into stoppage time in the first half.

The second half was a non-event after an enjoyable first period with both teams content to sit back and settle for the draw.

Inter boss Leonardo brushes off Mourinho return rumours

Leonardo on his way

Inter coach Leonardo has brushed aside speculation that Jose Mourinho could return to the club in the summer.

Real Madrid coach Mourinho has been linked with a return to the San Siro where he won the unprecedented Treble of Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League last season.

Inter have struggled since Mourinho's departure to Real Madrid, with Rafael Benitez departing despite winning the Club World Cup in December. New boss Leonardo enjoyed a promising start to his tenure, but last week Inter were knocked out of the Champions League by Schalke, while they they currently sit third in Serie A, eight points adrift of his former club and league leaders Milan.

"I am not worried about these rumours,'' Leonardo said. "I'm not thinking about the future. I live in the present. I don't even think about these things.

"I have an open rapport with the club president (Massimo Moratti). He knows me, knows what I think and the only thing that interests me is to find a solution so that the team wins.''

Leonardo was speaking after Tuesday night's 1-0 win at Roma in the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-finals.

"It was important to halt the negative run of results," he continued. "It wasn't easy, especially after our Champions League elimination.

"But against Roma we showed maturity and we took an important result - something that is not easy to do in Rome. Now we must continue to win. We still have five league games and the Coppa Italia and we need to remain lucid and calm.''

Arsenal, Tottenham Chasing Inter Milan Striker Diego Milito

Transfer news are out claiming that Premier League giants Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are going head to head in a £5million race to sign Inter Milan striker Diego Milito.

The 31 year old Argentinian international has bagged 27 goals in 53 appearances for the Nerazzurri, keeping up a fine goalscoring record he started at Racing Club, Real Zaragoza and Genoa.

Now the Italian club’s poor season, plus Milito’s desire to play in the Premier League, have put the North London rivals on red alert.

It is believed that his choice could depend on whether Spurs make it back into the Champions League next season as he is determined to play in Europe’s top competition again after Inter’s failure to defend their crown this campaign.

Arsenal are almost certain to be there again but Spurs’ presence hangs in the balance as they battle Manchester City for fourth spot in the Premier League.

Milito scored twice in Inter’s 2-0 triumph over Bayern Munch in the 2009 final.

Tottenham are expected to part company with Russian forward Roman Pavlyuchenko this summer, while Arsenal desperately want to pair Robin van Persie with another sharp-shooter to avoid a repeat of lost opportunities this term.

Inter 2-5 Schalke: Tie not over - Rangnick

Schalke coach Ralf Rangnick revelled in his side's stunning 5-2 victory in the San Siro over holders Inter last night, but admitted "we're not in the semi-finals just yet".

Inter went ahead in the very first minute, getting off to the dream start through Dejan Stankovic. The German side hit back though, shocking the San Siro with two goals through Joel Matip and Edu, either side of a Diego Milito strike, meaning the sides went into half time level at 2-2.

Seven minutes after the break, Champions League record goalscorer Raul put Schalke ahead, before Inter defender Andrea Ranocchia turned a cross into his own net. Christian Chivu was sent off on 62 minutes, and with fifteen minutes remaining Edu added a fifth for the visitors.

"We are not in the semi-finals just yet, but we have a pretty big chance now", said Rangnick post-match.

"We know we have to digest this first before we can fully appreciate it. Even at 3-2 and more so at 4-2 and after the second yellow for Chivu, I was certain we would not lose any more. In the end, we could have scored even more. It is surely the best game of my career."

"We saw Saturday's game here and how much space Milan were given so we decided to start with José Manuel Jurado, to play football. If you try to just defend against a team like Inter, you are asking for trouble. Still, the first half was incredible: it could have been 5-5 at half-time.

"With [Klaas-Jan] Huntelaar sidelined it was clear we needed a solution for the position of central forward and Edu needs to play there; he is not a winger. He got a real chance tonight and took it. Today, we can celebrate a bit, but then we have to focus on Saturday."

And Inter boss Leonardo admitted that it was hard to envisage a Nerazzurri recovery, though they would try.

"It has been a very difficult week in every sense: first the derby knockout, now this heavy defeat against Schalke," said the Brazilian. "Tonight's game started in the best possible fashion and it would have been difficult to predict what was to come. Early in the second half we missed a couple of chances and immediately Schalke scored their third.

"They had six or seven shots and scored five goals, so in that we can feel hard done by. After their third and fourth goals responding became difficult, especially with ten men, and in the end we lacked balance, as we did on Saturday against Milan. We played a different game tonight, changing several things, but still that was missing.

"It's difficult to think about mounting a recovery in the second leg, but we'll try to capture the best possible result. Unfortunately, the crucial period of the season has come at the wrong time for us. It took a lot of effort to climb the league standings and Inter always play to win: it's the only way we know."

Bayern Munich 2 Inter 3: Leonardo hails Inter

Leonardo celebratesSee the best odds on EVERY Champions League match in our dedicated betting centre…

Leonardo praised his Inter side after they progressed on the away goals rule in the Champions League against Bayern Munich.

The reigning champions were trailing 2-1 on the night and 3-1 down on aggregate after goals from Mario Gomez and Thomas Muller cancelled out Samuel Eto'o's opener, but after Wesley Sneijder made it 2-2 a Goran Pandev strike two minujtes from time secured a dramatic victory.

Brazilian head coach Leonardo insists that team spirit was the key to their success, although he admits they rode their luck at times as Bayern controlled the first half.

"To explain this contest would be truly difficult," he told Corriere dello Sport. "The difference was our heart.

"We prepared very well for the contest and we found ourselves quickly ahead. Then it became complicated and it was all Bayern.

"After their equaliser we have tried to play at a delicate psychological moment and we conceded another goal.

"Skill was the key to our recovery. We managed to recover without losing our heads. We stayed calm and tranquil.

"Pandev? He scored a goal that Maradona would have been proud of at a time that has not been so good for him.

"I can't take any credit for this. The team spirit was always here otherwise they would not have been able to achieve this result.

"This is a historical result because we have done it in the Champions League, but it's the same spirit we've shown in the championship.

"We risked so much because we were unbalanced. We did well to be in the match, even at difficult times, although there was much luck of course."

Vanquished Bayern coach Louis van Gaal said his players had thrown away a game they should have won.

"We wanted too much, which is a pity," he said. "It's not the first time this has happened: four or five times already this season we have given away a match we should have won and today it happened again.

"We could have settled matters earlier. Instead Inter are still standing, still have a chance – even if they hardly created any tonight, they did convert them. That's always a possibility in football.

"At half-time I told the team that we needed to stay compact and we created many chances even after that. We had one situation where three Bayern players were advancing on one Inter defender and we should have capitalised. Afterwards, we should have stayed compact, but we didn't and ran into trouble. That's what I meant when I warned them not to want too much. We made too many defensive mistakes, conceded too easily.

"The players gave their all, which is the criterion for a coach to judge if he is still getting through to the team. They enjoyed the match and so did the fans; now we are all disappointed we lost but we witnessed a good match."
