The Legend of Paul Scholes

It may sometimes be hard to believe that in Paul Scholes's 17 seasons in the Manchester United first team, he has amassed an amazing 10 Premier League titles, 2 Champions League trophies and won 3 FA Cups among many other awards. 675 appearances and 150 goals for one of the biggest and best clubs in the world is not bad going at all, and along with his stunning passing, sensational vision and intelligence on the field he has received countless plaudits. From team mates to footballing legends, Scholes really has attracted huge appreciation. Not that Scholes listens to it, in 2010 he said:
"I try to ignore the plaudits. It is nice for people to say positive things but I just put it to one side and concentrate on the next game."
What a player he is. The mini clip above shows just a fraction of the maestros considerable talents and with his career unfortunately drawing to a close with talk of retirement constant, I looked back on the players, managers and footballing legends who have heaped praised on this man's shoulders.

Ryan Giggs
"I have played with some great players during my time at United but I would have to put Paul Scholes down as the best.”
Sir Bobby Charlton

"Paul is always so in control and pin-point accurate with his passing—a beautiful player to watch."
Zinedine Zidane
“There is no doubt for me that Paul Scholes is still in a class of his own."
“He’s almost untouchable in what he does. I never tire of watching him play. You rarely come across the complete footballer, but Scholes is as close to it as you can get."
“One of my regrets is that the opportunity to play alongside him never presented itself during my career.”

Michael Carrick
"Paul Scholes is just fantastic."
"When you play alongside him, you realise what a special talent he is. He is so intelligent and clever, he makes the game look really simple and showed it against Celtic by creating two goals."
"Believe me, it is a pretty hard skill to be able to slot people through gaps when everything is going on around you. Paul can do that and I felt he was the big difference between the teams."
Thierry Henry
“For me the best player, and every time we used to play against Manchester United, we always used to be scared of Paul Scholes. For me, he was the best I have seen in the Premiership in the middle of the park."
“His vision, the way he sees the game, his goals ratio...a bit more now obviously, because we all, you know have to stop one day...but his goal ratio, his vision, he could put his foot in, whatever you wanted."
“I’m also a big fan of Steven Gerrard but for me, Paul Scholes was amazing.”
Xavi
"In the last 15 to 20 years the best central midfielder that I have seen — the most complete — is Scholes. I have spoken with Xabi Alonso about this many times. Scholes is a spectacular player who has everything."
"He can play the final pass, he can score, he is strong, he never gets knocked off the ball and he doesn’t give possession away. If he had been Spanish then maybe he would have been valued more."
"A role model. For me, and I really mean this, he's the best central midfielder I've seen in the last 15, 20 years. He's spectacular, he has it all, the last pass, goals, he's strong, he doesn't lose the ball, vision. If he'd been Spanish he might have been rated more highly. Players love him."
Edgar Davids
“I’m not the best, Paul Scholes is. We can all learn from Paul Scholes.”
Marcello Lippi
“Paul Scholes would have been one of my first choices for putting together a great team — that is how highly I have always rated him."
“An all-round midfielder with quality and character in abundance.”
Laurent Blanc
"I tell anyone who asks me — Scholes is the best English player.”
Peter Schmeichel
“His reading of the game is unsurpassed. He has the best eye for a pass, for what the play or the game needs at that precise moment, that I have never seen anyone else have."
“He controls and distributes the play and the game better than anyone I have ever seen.”
Sir Alex Ferguson
"He's one of the great players to come through the ranks here."
Pep Guardiola
"Out of everyone at Manchester United, I would pick out Scholes – he is the best midfielder of his generation."
"I would have loved to have played alongside him."
Nani
"He’s the best midfielder I’ve ever seen. He can pass, score goals with his left, right, his head – he can do anything."

Bin Hammam and Warner suspended by FIFA

Warner and Bin Hammam
FIFA has provisionally suspended executive committee members Mohamed Bin Hammam and Jack Warner after Sunday's meeting of its ethics committee.

Football's governing body will now begin a full investigation into allegations that bribes were offered to members of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU).

CFU officials Debbie Minguell and Jason Sylvester have also been suspended.

But FIFA president Sepp Blatter, who was accused of not reporting the evidence when it was brought to his attention, was found to have no case to answer.

Petrus Damaseb, deputy chairman of the ethics committee, said of Bin Hammam and Warner: "We are satisfied that there is a case to be answered."

However, FIFA insists that they are innocent until proven guilty.

If found guilty, the pair could be expelled from the organisation and banned from all football activity.

Bin Hammam due to oppose Blatter in the forthcoming election for the FIFA presidency but he withdrew in the early hours of Sunday morning in the wake of the allegations.

FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke confirmed that Wednesday's election would go ahead unless three-quarters of the 208 delegates voted to change the agenda.

"I am not FIFA, I can't change the agenda," Valcke said. "It is up to the delegates - they have the final say."

"I don't see what is wrong with this election with Mr Sepp Blatter.

"I think the most important thing is a commitment from all the members of the FIFA ExCo with the president to support a change within FIFA and in his last mandate make sure that FIFA is stronger and cleaner than it was.

"Maybe we can have the top guys around the world come to put things in place to stop these things from happening again."

The Qatari and his colleague, FIFA vice-president Warner, were forced to answer charges of bribery following allegations made by executive committee member Chuck Blazer in Zurich on Sunday.

It was alleged that they offered bribes at a meeting of the CFU on 10 and 11 May.

A file of evidence claimed cash payments of up to $40,000 were handed over to members of the CFU at the meeting in Trinidad.

The payments were allegedly made to secure votes for Bin Hammam in his bid to become FIFA president.

After the meeting, Blatter said in a statement: "The FIFA ethics committee has reached its decisions.

"I do not wish to comment in detail. But simply to say that I regret what has happened in the last few days and weeks.

"FIFA's image has suffered a great deal as a result, much to the disappointment of FIFA itself and all football fans."

Warner said he was shocked and surprised by the decision to suspend him.

"I will vigorously defend my reputation as well as the reputation of the rest of the Caribbean members," he said.

"I denied the allegations that I made statements at the CFU (Caribbean Football Union) meeting about gifts being given by Mr Bin Hammam. I also indicated that at the Miami CONCACAF Congress on May 3 Mr Blatter made a gift of one million USD to CONCACAF to spend as it deems fit."

He added: "This annoyed (UEFA) President Michel Platini who was present and he approached Secretary General Jerome Valcke complaining that Mr Blatter had no permission from the Finance Committee to make this gift to which Jerome replied that he will find the money for Mr Blatter.

"I also indicated at the CFU meeting held in Trinidad on May 10 which was requested by Mr Bin Hammam, FIFA through Mr Blatter organised gifts of laptops and projectors to all members of the Caribbean and no objections have been made today of this to date."

Bin Hammam also expressed his unhappiness with the verdict.

"I'm very disappointed about the way the status of the proceeding has been presented at the media conference," he said. "This is not how I understand fair play. I'm reserving all my rights."

Asked if the latest developments marked a nadir for FIFA, Valcke replied: "The reputation of FIFA? Maybe it's not at the highest, that's clear. It's sad.

"Definitely, there is a need for change. I'm not the FIFA president so he is the one who must decide what he wants to do and FIFA must make the necessary changes so that the institution has systems in place to avoid something like this happening again.

"This is the pattern of the work which we have to do very quickly in the next few months."

FC Barcelona 3-1 Manchester United – Match Highlights

Barcelona produced another masterclass display to beat Manchester United 3-1 win the Champions League final at Wembley.

Goals from Pedro, Lionel Messi and David Villa punctuated a mesmeric team display as the Catalan side lifted club football’s biggest prize for the fourth time.

Wayne Rooney fired a superb first-half equaliser for United, cancelling out Pedro’s opener, but the Premier League champions were evenutally blown away by superior opponents.

Edwin van der Sar’s final game before retirement ended in disappointment, with the Dutchman at fault for letting Messi’s low strike scuttle past hime early in the second half.

And Sir Alex Ferguson was unable to slow the Spanish team’s super-slick passing, suffering a second final defeat to them within three years.

Barcelona Interested In Signing Chelsea Superkid Josh McEachran

It has been revealed that Chelsea are fuming over departing sports director Frank Arnesen failed attempts to tie up a deal for superkid Josh McEachran.

According to The Daily Express McEachran, now age 18, has been hailed as one of the country’s brightest young stars and won Chelsea’s Young-Player-of-the-Year award after making 17 appearances for the first team this season.

However the midfielder has not been tied down to a long-term deal and Arnesen has effectively made that clear to clubs such as Manchester United, Arsenal and Barcelona by telling German sources that the player is on his wanted list.

England youth star McEachran signed his first professional contract with Chelsea, worth about £6,000 a week, last summer.

But that has only two years to run and, after his Premier League and Champions League debuts, it was decided that McEachran should be rewarded with a new deal including a substantial pay rise, tieing him to the club for the next five years.

Arnesen, however, did not manage to reach an agreement and talks have been delayed by the fact Chelsea are yet to appoint a new director or a manager.

Fulham have been awarded a place in next season's Europa League after their performance in UEFA's Fair Play table.

UEFA gave England an extra place in the competition based on results from all UEFA club and international matches played over the season.

Chelsea finished top of the Fair Play League but had already qualified for the Champions League and Fulham were in second spot.

The Premier League said in a statement: ''Fulham FC has finished the season as the highest placed club in the 2010-11 Fair Play League that has not already qualified for UEFA competitions via the 2010-11 Barclays Premier League.

''The club will take the additional European place awarded to England and compete in next season's UEFA Europa League.''

Champions League final preview - Barcelona v Manchester United

Champions League final preview - Barcelona v Manchester United

Barcelona and Manchester United each won their first European Cups at the old Wembley and both are seeking a fourth title at the new Wembley.

The Spanish and English champions could make a strong claim to being the two strongest sides of the current era, with both having made it through to three finals in the past five years.

The sides last met in the 2009 final in Rome, where Barcelona took the lead against the run of play and never looked back in what was ultimately a surprisingly comfortable 2-0 victory.

United's players have been watching DVDs of that game as they prepare to face Barca again, with defender Patrice Evra admitting his side were too complacent on the night.

"I am honest. I was confident in Italy. Maybe too confident," said United's French full-back.

"It hurt so much when we lost. We did the team pictures the following season. We had three trophies. But we were missing the one with the big ears.

"Everyone says Barcelona are the best team in the world now. I respect that.

"But, two years ago, everyone said we were going to beat Barcelona easily in Rome. Maybe the opposite will happen this time.

"Barcelona are very good at keeping the ball but football is not about keeping the ball, it is about scoring goals."

FIFA Ballon d'Or 2010 holder, Lionel Messi who scored Barcelona's second goal in the 2009 final, is unsure how different his side are now - if at all.

"It's always difficult to compare but what is true is that both teams [Barcelona in 2009 and Barcelona in 2011] showed some great football - and both always tried to play attractive football that people loved to watch," said the Argentinian.

Argentine forward Messi, 23, is the current Fifa world footballer of the year

"We always try to stick to our game and tried to develop our game every time we played - and we've always achieved big things. In 2009 we won the Champions League in a very impressive style and [after that] winning La Liga again and again.

"So I would like to think that some of us are just a bit more experienced this time round.

"We arrived to the final in top form and only a step away from making history once more."

Not the best team ever

Barcelona will start the match as favourites, though coach Pep Guardiola has been been keen to deflect attention away from a side that some observers believe is the best team of all time.

“I don't think so [that Barcelona are the best ever side]," he said. "When the people are watching this team if they enjoy we are happy, but we have to respect Brazil, Milan, Liverpool, Manchester or even Madrid for the best moments.

“It is difficult to compare, it is for example to say who is better - Pele, Maradona, Messi or Beckenbauer, all these kind of players in the right moment help to make football better than before.

“What would we like, in the coming 10-15 years people remember that in that time Barcelona played good football and we enjoyed that time when we saw that would be the best thing, but to say right now is impossible.”

Guardiola is boosted by the return to action of left-back, Eric Abidal, who has spent two months out following surgery on a liver tumour.

The French left-back is now in contention to play at Wembley alongside fellow defenders Dani Alves, Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique, although versatile Argentine Javier Mascherano is another alternative if Guardiola decides he does not want to risk Abidal and Puyol - who has also has had injury problems recently.

Sergio Busquets will play the holding role in midfield that allows Xavi and Iniesta freedom to express themselves, while Messi will be supported in attack by David Villa and Pedro.

Experience vital

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is chasing a hat-trick of Champions League wins and should he claim the European Cup for a third time on Saturday he will equal Bob Paisley's record with Liverpool.

The Scotsman thinks that experience is now a major factor in his side's favour.

"We've gathered an experience over the last few years that has acquitted us well for European football now," he said.

"We're far more patient away from home and we never used to be. European football does that and I think the players have learned that the concentration levels have to be very, very good because every club has a different way of playing and a different sense and style of the tempo in matches.

"Sometimes in a European game, you can be doing actually quite well and then the roof falls in, suddenly. "Many of our players are used to that now. They don't get caught out by sudden attacks against them the way that they used to years ago."

Ferguson has a fully fit squad to choose from. The Wembley final will be the final appearance in the illustrious career of goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, who retires after the match.

The veteran Dutchman will be shielded by a back four comprising Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand, captain Nemanja Vidic and one of the Brazilian twins, perhaps Fabio.

Ferguson has decision to make in midfield, although in recent matches, he hs favoured the quartet of Antonio Valencia, Michael Carrick, Ryan Giggs and Park Ji-sung. Further forward, Wayne Rooney will link midfield and attack, while up front the live-wire Javier Hernandez is set to cap a terrific debut season as United's sole striker.

Barcelona and United are both seeking a fourth European Cup, which would take them level with Ajax and Bayern Munich and behind only Liverpool (five wins), Milan (seven) and Real Madrid (nine).

Statistics

• This is the clubs' 11th meeting and the record so far is three wins each and four draws. The teams have contested two major finals, Barcelona prevailing in their last meeting in Rome in 2009 while United won their 1991 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup decider in Rotterdam.

• Barcelona and United are both seeking a fourth European Cup, which would take them level with AFC Ajax and FC Bayern München and behind only Liverpool FC (five wins), AC Milan (seven) and Real Madrid (nine).

1985/86 Steaua Bucharest 0-0 (0-2 pens) (L)

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL PRE-MATCH | POSSIBLE FC BARCELONA STARTING 11 AGAINST MANCHESTER UNITED.

The build up is strong locally as the Football World eagerly anticipates the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL at Wembley (London) tomorrow between MANCHESTER UNITED & FC BARCELONA. Listening to the commentaries today one gets the idea that most see Barça as clear favourites, although the English Club comes into the Final on a wave of good form. The Spanish Club on the other hand goes in with Pedro & Villa below maximum form & even Lionel Messi playing less than his usual habitual level. Said this,  one one doubts that the mentioned players will be more the likely in the FC BARCELONA starting 11 along with the names being unanimously given by most local media observers:

Valdes, Alves, Pique, Puyol, Abidal (Mascherano), Busquets, Xavi Hernandez, Iniesta, Villa, Messi & Pedro.

Football FC Barcelona 2011
Rooney - Messi : Stars of Man Utd & FC Barcelona

The only doubt in the mind of Barça Coach Guardiola is if Abidal starts or not. If not, Puyol would take the left back position & Mascherano would play alongside Pique in the central defensive position.

In reference to Manchester United, Spain is "far away" from the local media experts & we are receiving the following ideas on how United Coach Ferguson could start tomorrow. According to the London based press, Manchester has two models to chose from & apparently Ferguson has not shown as yet his cards. There is a more "midfield packed" - conservative version of 5 midfielders to stop the Barça play-making & ball control style, or there is the "attacking model" with Chicharito upfront with Rooney playing in a forward supportive role while utilizing  their counter-attacking strengths & speed with the dangerous Valencia down the wing.

Either way, Manchester United look great on paper, have looked excellent during the final stretch of the Premier League & will be respected by Barcelona. It´s going to be a grand final & a game not to be missed.

From here, best of luck to both sides & may the better team win.

Downing Will Leave Villa For Arsenal or Liverpool

type="html">

Stewart Downing, the Aston Villa left winger will leave the club this summer. He has not explicitly said so in public as yet, but has rather dropped a major hint that he will look for a new club soon by saying that he will not be signing a new contract at Aston Villa at the moment because he is at a "major crossroad" in his career.

My sources, whom I believe to be very much in the know, say that in private, he is looking for the exit door this summer, and that Arsenal and Liverpool are interested in signing him - particularly the latter. Kenny Dalglish is a big fan of the England international, and the Liverpool manager apparently got in contact with Downing a few weeks ago. D
owning said:
"Martin O'Neill, left and that was strange. He was one of the main reasons why I went to Villa. It was difficult when he left, everything changed. It took some getting used to, but credit to the new manager (Gerard Houllier) he led the team through a very good run in the end and I have enjoyed being such a big part of the team."
"I know the club are keen for me to extend my contract as I only have two years left on my deal and that my agent (Struan Marshall) had a recent meeting with our chief executive (Paul Faulkner). However, I am 26 and at a major crossroads in my career so I won't be committing to a new deal at the moment."
However, a major factor that may swing in Arsenal's direction is Downing's desire to play Champions League football. The 26 year-old added: "The most important thing is to play football, but I do want to play in the Champions League at some point."

While Liverpool have failed to even reach the Europa League, Arsenal have secured a qualifying place in the Champions League, and this is a qualifying place which they surely must be favourites to progress through. If Downing wants immediate Champions League football, then Arsenal would be his choice between the two clubs. But, with Liverpool's new manager and new signings, he could either join immediately and help them to a Champions League spot next season, or ride out another year of his 2 year Aston Villa contract and join Liverpool next summer.

In other transfer news, Liverpool are close to signing Wigan's James McCarthy for £10 million while Arsenal's Gael Clichy looks set to leave on the cheap due to his expiring contract in a £5 million deal to Bayern Munich. Arsenal are also once interested in signing long term target Chris Samba for £10 million from Blackburn.

The Glazers To Hand Sir Alex £160 Million For Summer Signing

Reports have surfaced that Manchester United owners, the Glazer family has told Sir Alex Ferguson that he can spend big this summer.

The Scottish tactician has spoken about finding at least three major signings during the close-season transfer market.

According to The Guardian, Ferguson has a substantial transfer budget at his disposal for big-name targets during a summer in which the club’s bank account is expected to swell to more than £160m.

Club insiders say that any acquisitions will have to fit the template followed by Manchester United under the Glazers, with an emphasis on younger players who will retain value.

The club has bought one player in the past 14 years who was over 27 and cost more than £3m – Dimitar Berbatov for £31m.

According to Manchester United’s most recent accounts, the club have £113m in the bank and that has fuelled suspicions that the owners will withdraw some of it in dividends but insiders claim it is there for transfers and to guard against unforeseen events.

Sensational transfer news are out and it has been reported that Arsenal and Tottenham are both willing to pay £26 million to sign Porto striker Radamel Falcao.

The 25 year old Colombian international striker scored a record-breaking 17 goals to help Porto win the Europa League this season – surpassing Jurgen Klinsmann’s 15-year-old record of 15 goals in a single campaign.

The striker’s form has attracted plenty of attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Falcao also found the back of the net 16 times in Porto’s victorious league campaign and the Portuguese champions are in contract negotiations with the former River Plate star after admitting that the €30 million (£26 million) release clause in his current deal is too low.

And according to Claudio Mossi, an agent from the Sivori & Asociados group that represents Falcao, both Arsenal and Tottenham are willing to pay the buyout amount.

“England are crazy about Falcao,” Mossi said.

“Among the leading candidates are Arsenal and Tottenham. They are willing to hit the €30 million clause. The figure is not an extraordinary value for them.”

Falcao spoke of his intention to stay at the Estadio do Dragao after scoring the winner in last week’s Europa League final win over Braga.

Falcao also said that he wanted to remain with the Portuguese champions to play Champions League football under young manager Andre Villas-Boas, and Mossi added that staying with Porto is an option.

“He is very happy at Porto,” Mossi said.

“There he can play the Champions next year. The problem is that every day he is linked with other clubs. It is important that he is left alone for a time with his family now to decide.”

Chelsea Closing In On Anderlecht Superstar Romelu Lukaku

Interesting news are out and it has been revealed that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is finalising a £20 million deal for Anderlecht star Romelu Lukaku.

The Daily Mail has reported that the Russian billionaire consulted senior members of his Stamford Bridge staff earlier this week about Lukaku.

It is said that the parties agreed that they should press ahead with a move, despite the void created by Carlo Ancelotti’s sacking.

Chelsea have already been assured by the 18-year old’s advisers that he sees his future at Stamford Bridge, and Abramovich is now in the process of agreeing a fee with Anderlecht.

Though the Belgium club were hoping for approaching £30million for their powerfully-built frontrunner, they will accept nearer £20million after he made little secret of his wish to become a Chelsea player.

Sources close to Lukaku, who has already broken into the senior Belgium side and scored two goals in nine appearances, have confirmed he views Chelsea as his main option.

Messi relaxed ahead of showdown

Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi is "relaxed" ahead of the Champions League Final and admits he wants to stay with Barcelona for the rest of his career.

Already regarded as an all-time great by many, 23-year-old Messi, whose side face Manchester United on Saturday, said: "It's a privilege. It hasn't put any extra weight on my shoulders.

"I love seeing people enjoying themselves while watching me and my team-mates playing and to be able to win all these titles for them.

"I always take things easy - and I'm very relaxed about it because things have gone our way for a long time.

"My idea is to stay at Barcelona," he said. "It's true that in football you never know what is going to happen - one day you are here and two years later you are transferred [for example].

"But as far I'm concerned I would like to play for Barcelona forever."

When asked about Saturday's opponents United, Messi conceded that he does not follow English football too closely.

"Not really - to be honest with you I don't [watch] much football at all but I know that they are a very strong side and well deserved champions of a very difficult league," he stated. "That says it all.

"I'm not sure where their weaknesses are because they are a very strong side, very physical and extremely efficient in all their lines.

"I'm one of those players that doesn't look too much at the opposition and concentrates about what we need to do. This is a one-off game - but we have to think about us.

"We all know what we are capable of because of what we have showed during the whole season. We got to this final in good shape, the guys are up for it. We can't wait for the game to kick off and to probe ourselves once more [to see whether] we can win this again."

Barcelona beat United 2-0 in the 2009 Champions League in Rome, although Messi is unsure how different his side are now - if at all.

He commented: "It's always difficult to compare but what is true is that both teams [Barcelona in 2009 and Barcelona in 2011] showed some great football - and both always tried to play attractive football that people loved to watch.

Of United's individuals, Messi said England striker Wayne Rooney was a threat.

"He's a huge player, very skilful and very quick," he added. "He's scored many great goals and is a fully rounded player that can create danger at any time."

Bin Hammam and Warner investigated by FIFA

Warner and Bin Hammam

FIFA have opened an investigation into the conduct of four officials – including vice-president Jack Warner and presidential candidate Mohamed Bin Hammam – in relation to bribery allegations.

The claims were made by executive committee member Chuck Blazer, general secretary of the CONCACAF federation, allege that violations were committed under the FIFA code of ethics during a meeting organised by Bin Hammam and Warner concerning the forthcoming FIFA presidential election.

Bin Hammam is the president of the Asian Football Confederation and is challenging Sepp Blatter to be the new president of FIFA in next month's elections.

A FIFA statement read: "On 24 May, 2011, FIFA executive committee member and Concacaf general secretary Chuck Blazer reported to Fifa secretary general Jerome Valcke possible violations of the FIFA code of ethics allegedly committed by officials.

"In particular, the report referred to a special meeting of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU), apparently organised jointly by FIFA vice-president Jack A. Warner and FIFA executive committee member Mohamed Bin Hammam, which took place on 10-11 May 2011. This meeting was linked to the upcoming FIFA presidential election.

"In view of the facts alleged in this report, which include bribery allegations, FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke, in compliance with art. 16 of the FIFA code of ethics, yesterday requested the FIFA ethics committee open ethics proceedings."

Bin Hammam and Warner, along with CFU officials Debbie Minguell and Jason Sylvester, have been invited to attend a hearing in Zurich on Sunday.

The chairman of the ethics committee, Claudio Sulser, will not oversee the proceedings because he shares Swiss nationality with Blatter, and this could be construed as a conflict of interests. The meeting will be chaired by the committee's deputy chairman Petrus Damaseb of Namibia.

The new investigation is separate to the inquiry launched earlier this month by FIFA into claims made in parliament regarding the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups last year.

The former Football Association chairman Lord Triesman alleged during a culture, media and sport select committee hearing that he had witnessed "improper and unethical" behaviour by four ExCo members – including Warner – during his time as England's 2018 World Cup bid chairman.

The charges against Bin Hammam throw his candidacy in to doubt, and there could also be implications for Qatar's 2022 World Cup.

The allegations against Warner, a long-term ally of Blatter, and considered the kingmaker in the presidential election with his control of the 40 CONCACAF votes, could signal the end of his influence within football's governing body.

Bin Hammam and Warner respond to FIFA claims

Warner and Bin Hammam

FIFA presidential candidate Mohamed Bin Hammam and vice president Jack Warner , who have been accused of bribery allegations, have denied any wrongdoing.

Bin Hammam has responded to allegations that he offered bribes for votes, suggesting the claim is "little more than a tactic" being used by Sepp Blatter, his opponent in next week's FIFA presidential election.

Warner told The Daily Telegraph that he “was unaware of any wrongdoing on my part”.

Bin Hammam and Warner will appear before FIFA's ethics committee on Sunday where they will answer to charges made by fellow executive committee member Chuck Blazer are proved.

Bin Hammam said in a statement: "This has been a difficult and painful day for me today. But, if there is even the slightest justice in the world, these allegations will vanish in the wind.

"This move is little more than a tactic being used by those who have no confidence in their own ability to emerge successfully from the FIFA presidential election."

Blazer, the general secretary of the CONCACAF federation of which Warner is president, has claimed that there were violations of FIFA's code of ethics during a meeting organised by Bin Hammam and Warner for Caribbean Football Union associations in the Bahamas. Two CFU officials, Debbie Minguell and Jason Sylvester, have also been charged.

Bin Hammam added: "I remain deeply indebted to Mr Warner for his sense of fair play because without his support and understanding I would not have been able to meet with several important member associations of FIFA to discuss my election manifesto.

"Here I completely deny any allegations of wrongdoing either intentionally or unknowingly while I was in the Caribbean. I will speak to Mr Warner on this subject and offer him my full support in ensuring we are discharged honourably by the FIFA Ethics Committee, a body which I hold in the highest esteem.

"I am confident that there is no charge to answer and that I will be free to stand in the FIFA presidential election on 1 June as originally planned."

Interesting timing

Warner hinted that the charges were linked to the presidential election, in which Blatter is standing for a fourth term against Bin Hammam.

“I take note of the initiative by FIFA'S Ethics Committee and confirm that I have been invited to attend a hearing this week Sunday, May 29, 2011 in Zurich,” Warner said.

“I am unaware of the particulars of the matter being investigated by FIFA at this time, so I will therefore abstain from any comment until such time as I have been made aware of all that has been submitted to FIFA.

“It is informative to note that the CONCACAF, at its Congress in Miami on May 3, was informed of Bin Hamman being unable to get a US Visa to attend and that, as an alternative, he will like to meet the delegates in Trinidad on May 10.

“What I can say at this time is that I am not aware of any wrongdoing on my part and I shall listen to allegations made and respond accordingly.

“It is interesting to note the timing of these allegations and the hearing scheduled days before the FIFA Presidential elections.

“As this is now a formal procedure, I shall not be offering any further comment prior to the hearing on Sunday.”

Manchester United sign De Gea

David De Ge
Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Manchester United will sign Atletico Madrid goalkeeper David De Gea this summer.

United require a replacement for veteran shot-stopper Edwin van der Sar, who will retire after Saturday's Champions League final with Barcelona.

The 40-year-old former Ajax, Juventus and Fulham keeper has won six major trophies with United, including the Champions League in 2008.

De Gea has long been linked with a move to Old Trafford and a deal between the Premier League champions and Atletico is in place, with a fee understood to be in the region of €21million (£18.3million) with additional add-ons.

And Ferguson feels that the 20-year-old is the ideal man to fill the void which will be left by the departure of Dutchman Van der Sar this summer.

The Scot told Sky Sports News: "We've been working on it for quite a while, we identified him a while back as one we should go for.

"He's a young goalkeeper, very quick, with good composure and presence.

"He's an outstanding replacement for Edwin van der Sar.

"We were looking for someone with the same types of qualities. One great quality Edwin always had was his composure and organisational ability.

"David De Gea is very similar that way."

Responding to the news United were closing in on De Gea, Atletico president Enrique Cerezo told Spanish radio station Cadena Ser: "We don't know anything. Officially neither Manchester [United] or the player at this moment have informed us of anything.

"He [De Gea] knows very well that he can negotiate [with other clubs] but always that they have to pay his buy-out clause."

Wenger intends to spend

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has moved to ease fans' concerns about the club's spending plans, by insisting the Gunners will be busy in the summer transfer market.

Wenger said: "We can't buy players for £50 million. Even if we try to strengthen our team and spend money if needed, that is a fact.

"The market will be hyperactive because everyone believes financial fair play will happen soon," Wenger said, referring to UEFA's plans to limit club spending.

"So we are quickly doing the last buying before the stores will be closed. And for the first time for a while, I will be very active, too."

Despite admitting he will be "very active", Wenger remains unonvinced that the squad needs a major overhaul.

"The club is in a healthy financial situation and we have got the basis of the team but we know we want to be stronger next year," Wenger told French television.

"The fans need to trust us because the club is in a strong position. I share their disappointment because a few weeks ago we were in a position to win the league and in the end we play for qualifying in the Champions League.

"Whether we deserve to come fourth or not, it is the points which count. The team has given a lot this year, we will be active and busy certainly and will try to make the right decisions. We have to take it on the chin and come back stronger next season."

Guus Hiddink Close To Chelsea Return

Reports are out claiming that Guus Hiddink is edging closer to a return to Chelsea.

The Daily Mail has revealed that publicly, Hiddink’s agent declared that he would not be available until Turkey’s European Championship qualifying campaign ends in October.

However it is said that the Dutch tactician is likely to be sacked if his side fail to beat Belgium in Brussels on Friday week.

Hiddink is then expected to return to Stamford Bridge for the role he occupied on a temporary basis in 2009.

According to sources close to Hiddink, the man who guided PSV Eindhoven to European Cup glory in 1988 has even been given permission in principle by Roman Abramovich to work as an advisor to Ajax while operating as Chelsea’s manager.

There was a very obvious shift in the attitude of the Turks on Monday, as there was from Hiddink’s agent, Cees van Nieuwenhuizen.

Until now, both had dismissed suggestions that Hiddink could return to Chelsea but senior Turkey national team communications manager Turker Tozar said: “At this stage, we will leave everything to Mr Hiddink and if he sees the need to speak about this issue, he will do this personally. We have a press conference on May 27. If he wishes to comment on these rumours or leaks, he will do it.’

Pressed on whether they would refuse any approach for Hiddink from Chelsea, Tozar added: “Last month, our vice-president was asked and he said we had long-term plans with Mr Hiddink.

“If there are new issues, Hiddink will talk about this.”

Asked whether his client had completely ruled out a club management role as his next move, Van Nieuwenhuizen said: “I don’t know that you can say that.”
