Manchester United 5-0 Wigan Highlights Goals Video 26 December 2011

On Monday afternoon we wil have Wigan Athletic traveling to face English Premier League defending Champions Manchester United in what will be a massive match between the two and its very important for United going into the new year. Their local rivals Manchester City are playing their game away from home and that gives United and oppertunity to take the lead at the top of the table if City drop points.

Wigan on the other hand are kind of a team who struggles against the big teams and on their previous few visits at Old Trafford they have been hammered all the time and that kind of looks all three points in the bag for United and I can tip Rooney and Nani to score in this one.

Wayne Rooney has kind of got his early season form back and now he is looking sharp infront of the goals which gives United a cutting edge going into the crucial period of the season. You can tune in here to get the live updates and the match highlights which will be available shortly before it all starts.

Wenger Considering Several Signings

While many will be unwrapping presents and digging into a generous helping of turkey and pudding on Christmas day, Arsenal's devoted manager will meticulously be going over and over in his mind who he should bring in to the London club during the January transfer window. He may not be very good company around the dinner table for the 25th, but come the 1st January, he could well have a vintage Thierry Henry to unwrap, and perhaps even a brand new left back in the form of Wayne Bridge, and the French manager will surely be a lot more satisfied and relaxed going into the new year. He may even be filled with enough festive cheer to spend some money.

Having no recognized left backs in his side at present is a headache cured only by the approaching January transfer window, with the similarly troublesome departures of Marouanne Chamkh and Gervinho to the African Cup of Nations also prompting Wenger to act in the market. He has Christmas day off thanks to Arsenal's boxing day fixture against being moved back to the 27th due to tube strikes, and will put it to good use with a period of thinking time.

His comments yesterday confirmed that he has already established players need to be brought into the club, and that they will most likely be short term loan deals simply to keep the squad strong in the face of current injuries. The thinking time set aside for the Arsenal manager is there for him to ponder on who specifically would be available and suitable for the job at hand. He said:

"It can only be a short-term solution for us because we have bought [Andre] Santos, we have Gibbs, we have [Thomas] Vermaelen who can play there, so we do not need a long-term solution."

"Long-term, I am sticking to Santos and Gibbs, I love both of them because they have a quality I like, which is to attack. I haven't made any enquiry yet [for Wayne Bridge], so for the moment not him or anyone else."
Manchester City's out of favour left-back, Wayne Bridge has been the one player rumoured as most likely, and as he is not needed at City having played only once this season, and forced to train with the youngsters rather than the first team, it is understandable if he wished to move to Arsenal for some action. However, Wenger has, as he emphasizes, time to decide on exact personnel.

Talk of Wenger attempting to turn back time and re-introduce club legend, Thierry Henry to the adoring Arsenal fans may yet turn into a reality, but again, Wenger needs to think about it and make the decision as to whether it would be beneficial to him to bring back the clubs all-time leading goalscorer to help Robin van Persie with his goal-getting duties. As is known, Henry is currently training with the London side while his current MLS side, the New York Red Bulls enjoy the end of their season. Wenger said yesterday:

"That's why I have Christmas Day off. I have to think about that. Short-term is ideal for us, but I haven't made any enquiry yet. Thierry is not here at the moment. It has never come up in conversation."

"The 1st of January is the vital date for us. We are at the 23rd of December today, so we have seven days to make decisions and I will make a decision in the next seven days on players. I promise you will know."
While Henry may be a popular option for Arsenal fans, and a big moral boost for the squad, some may prefer to remember the legend as exactly that - a player who was unrivaled in his time with the club, and that is something perhaps in Wenger's mind. Other more expensive options like Lukas Podolski who has also been linked to Arsenal recently would give the side an exceptional boost in quality but would damage Arsenal's bank balance - another thing on Wenger's mind.

Wenger will use Christmas to decide on Arsenal's transfer activity, and whether or not it will be a happy new year will rest upon those decisions. Bridge, Henry, Podolski, with murmurs of the French midfielder Johan Gourcuff being offered to Wenger. Who comes in and how much will be spent will be decided over Christmas dinner at Mr Wenger's house.

Wenger in the Market for a Full-Back

Arsene Wenger will search the transfer market for a full-back suitable for Arsenal this January in light of the injuries which have blighted the club in that position so far this season.

Injuries to Bacary Sagna, Andres Santos, Kieran Gibbs and Carl Jenkisnon - all full-backs - as well as an injury to Johan Djourou, a centre back whose versatility has been utilized in the full-back position, has forced Wenger's hand.

The Arsenal manager confirmed that if the situation with Kieran Gibbs worsens or does not improve, the likelihood of him delving into the market will increase, confirming that he has already started looking for new recruits, saying on Tuesday:

"It depends now on Gibbs. He sees a specialist again today and if something happens there that he has had a real setback then possibly, yes. It is not a shop, you just take a good opportunity that is on the market when you can. Overall that's what we are doing at the moment. We are starting to look at players if Gibbs is not back."
Already there are reports that Arsenal have their eye on former Chelsea left-back Wayne Bridge, who currently plays very sparingly - if not at all - for Manchester City. Arsenal are reportedly lining up a loan move for the 31 year-old English defender who recently had a spell out on loan with Championship side, West Ham United.

Bridge is hardly in the form of his life; he rarely plays with the City first team, having been restricted to only 1 first team appearance in the Carling Cup this season, and he trains with the youngsters rather than the actual squad. While any move for Bridge may be questioned by Arsenal fans, it is an understandably cheap and short term option which takes into account the possible return of the other Arsenal full-backs coming close to recovery.

However, at the present moment, Thomas Vermaelen, Laurent Koscielny and perhaps Sebastian Squillaci will be forced to play out of position, with the young midfielder Francis Coquelin, who has been complaining about his lack of use in the first team, also a possibility for Arsenal, but this is a huge inconveniance for the side tactically. Wenger explained:

"It's difficult because first of all we have centre-backs who do not like to play at full-back. We are a team who likes to go forward through the full-backs, so of course, they are in a position where they have to produce different games. That is much more demanding physically."

"That exposes us even more to injuries, so I try to rotate people – one time right-back, one time centre-back. I can use Sebastien Squillaci, I can use Ignasi Miquel, I can use Francis Coquelin. Let's be frank and honest, no solution will be ideal because whatever we do, two players will have to play out of position."
Arsenal travel to Villa Park on Wednesday evening, and a weaker defensive line is likely to be sent out, but because of injuries, and until the January transfer window, it is the only solution.

Manchester United 4-1 Wolverhampton Highlights Goals Video - December 2011

After a very difficult week where Manchester United saw themselve got out of the Champions League knock out stages as they were defeated by a very inspired FC basel side in the Wednesday night encounter and now they will be hoping to get back to winning ways and try to reduce the gap at the top of the table when they take on Wolves side. Usualy United do get back to winning ways after some disaster result but this United side is not only lacking so much creativity in the middle of the park but they are also struggling to cope as a good defensive United,.

Manchester United previous 7 matches they have been unable to play as the way they started their 2011-2012 season, they were scoring loads of goals and the fact that Wayne Rooney is totaly out of form is not helping the matters while the likes of Nani, Ashley Young and Hernandes who is out Injured are problem too with the form and fitness. on the other hand they lost their captain Namanja Vidic for 4 months which leaves gap at the back.

Wolverhampton will be eager to get out there and get somthing under their belt when they take on United at Old Trafford, Ofcource that is a touch match for them as they are playing away from home but looking at United's recent performecnes they will be going out there with more confidence than ever.

Below Par United Blown Away By Basel

Hands on hips, dejected shakes of the heads, and frustrated mutters under the breaths of Manchester United players - defeated in the Champions League as they watched their victors in envy, celebrating before them. Their muddy white away kits suggested that these players had battled to the very end for a win to ensure progression in this prestigious European competition - and they did battle, they did fight, they did attack for the required three points; just not anywhere near as well enough.

United travelled to Switzerland in the knowledge that a result was expected of them. A draw or a win would ensure qualification to the knock-out rounds, but this is Manchester United, and it was thought only the three points would do. They travel back to England with nothing but an overwhelming sense of disappointment, the uninspiring thought of playing in the Europa League, and their managers words no doubt ringing in their ears following his very likely forcefully loud diagnosis of their loss in the away dressing room at the end of the game.

"United thrive under pressure," we were told prior to the game by the clubs summer recruit, Phil Jones. Going by this result, clearly not, Phil. A goal behind after just nine minutes thanks to a bit of questionable goalkeeping from David de Gea meant Manchester United were chasing the game, and despite dominating the chances conceded another just before the end. A late United goal which squirmed agonizingly over the line was hardly a consolation for the lack of quality in finishing chances throughout the game; despite the high expectations and the typicality for United to grab late goals, the team failed to deliver, just as they have done throughout this seasons Champions League.

When Basel came to Old Trafford, United lost a two goal lead and came close to losing the game 2 - 3. If it wasn't for a late Ashley Young header, Sir Alex Ferguson and his team would have been out before last nights game even began. The fact that United's only two wins in the competition this year were against the previously unknown and in the end pointless side, Otelul Galati, suggests that the clubs chances of getting wins from the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid further into the competition were slim from the get-go.

Blame it on poor form, bad luck with injuries, awful finishing of chances, or just all round disappointing performances; all played their part, but looking back on the group stage now, there were so many missed opportunities and avoidable errors which rendered United complacent, off-guard, naive and wasteful. Progression wasn't deserved.

There have been too many blips in United's Champions League journey, and clearly there are a number of issues which need sorting out. However, at the present moment, United will have to concentrate on where they are left, and what they are left with - the Europa League. They are joined by Manchester City, who also failed to qualify despite gaining an impressive 10 points in an incredibly difficult group in comparison to United, and both Manchester clubs will surely be favorites for the 'crown' if they take it at all seriously.

An awful injury to the captain Nemanja Vidic was probably the biggest blow to the club in the short term and possibly long term, with his knee buckling horribly under pressure and at an awkward angle. There are fears it could be ligament damage with the Serbian being stretchered off in agony - yet another slice of bad luck for United's medical staff who are currently nursing three strikers and a few midfielders.

Luck has been on United's side before, but tonight, and recently, not much has gone the way of Ferguson's team. Second in the League they may be, but out of the Champions League (and Carling Cup) against opposition who, with respect, should be defeated is and cannot be good enough for the three time winners of the European Cup.

This loss is a reality check and a wake-up call. Breezing through the group stages is not an option. Taking your chances, winning games and building a solid team who can defend simple attacks as well as intricate ones is crucial. Unfortunately, this year, United seemed unprepared for the challenge, and they have been ruthlessly punished.

What Vidic's Injury Means for Manchester United

When Nemanja Vidic writhes around on the floor in pain, you know it's bad. He certainly isn't one to go down easy, to practise theatrics or to feign pain for a free-kick, and as he waved frantically to the bench, it was clear that this injury was a bad one.

The disturbing replays confirmed it, and today we have learned that the Serbian defender and Manchester United's incredibly influential captain has indeed suffered the horrible and much feared cruciate knee ligament rupture which, if true, could mean Vidic will miss the rest of Manchester United's season, with the usual recovery period of around nine months.

The injury has not been confirmed by United at the time of writing, but rather Vidic's agent, Silvani Martino. Sir Alex Ferguson did say after United's 2-1 loss to Basel that it looked like a medial-ligament injury, which would see Vidic out for around four months, but either way, the 30 year-old will miss a substantial chunk of the Champions' wavering season.

So what will be done to make up for such an important players long term absence? The immediate reaction would be to look to the January transfer window for comfort. Ferguson is not known for his overly active winters in the market, but surely he will make an exception for an extraordinary event such as this. Out of the Champions League at the Group stages, desperately lacking the creative edge in midfield of recent years, an injury crisis up front and the captain out for the rest of the season. Luck hasn't been kind in this respect.

There are a number of possibilities to entertain. Firstly, Ferguson could buy a Vidic replacement. Easier said than done, indeed. Chelsea's Alex springs to mind as a short term man for the job, considering his transfer request and wish to escape London. He has experience in the Premier League and knows what it's like to play in a rotating back line, having played with a number of defenders in his time with Chelsea. However, Sir Alex has a healthy number of central defenders who could step into the position rendering movement in the transfer window needless.

Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans can partner Rio Ferdinad, providing he stays fit, however with this possible solution, further problems arise. Smalling is covering at right back in the absence of a regular player iN that position thanks to Rafael and Fabios consistent injury troubles, while Phil Jones is currently being utilised in the midfield in the absence of a powerful enforcer of play. That leaves just Jonny Evans.

With respect to Evans, he is no Vidic. He is a very good defender when he is on his game, but a number of times - perhaps too many times - he has made crucial mistakes which have opened him up to heavy criticism within United's broad fan base. A partnership with Ferdinand, who himself is not consistently solid or fit is not a title challenging partnership, and there lies a real issue for Ferguson to address.

Indeed, when Tom Cleverley returns with Carrick, Fletcher and Anderson, United's midfield will hopefully not require Phil Jones, giving United another option at the back, but what guarantee is there that the midfield is good enough to keep up with the likes of Manchester City's in the frantic chase for the title? It hasn't been awe inspiring so far, and quite simply, there are none.

The problem is, Sir Alex Ferguson did not recruit a central midfielder when Paul Scholes retired at the end of last season. It has left United light in the midfield, and with awfully bad luck with injuries, this lack of depth in the midfield have been exposed for all to see. Rooney has had to play in midfield, as has Phil Jones, with Ashley Young forced to play centrally a number of times. Giggs too has come inside, although that is more to do with his diminishing pace out on the wing - but all rotation like this leaves other positions light too.

Now without another vital player in Vidic for the rest of the season, Manchester United's team looks further diminished. Players are and will play out of position, and more injuries will be picked up between now and the end of the season. A midfield recruit this winter to me, should certainly be a high priority on Sir Alex Ferguson's to-do list.

There are too many ifs and buts, and not enough guarantees. United have already been punished for complacency and are out of the Champions League because of it. It would be naive of Ferguson not to use this upcoming transfer window to his advantage: to inject new life, new energy and new talent into his side which it desperately needs. If anything is for certain, it is that Manchester United need a boost, and one or two January signings will go some way in providing that.

Another Injury In the Arsenal Midfield

Arsenal's official website notes, "When he's fit and firing on all cylinders, [he] is one of Arsenal's most dynamic players." It is just unfortunate then, that Abou Diaby, Arsenal's "dynamic" French midfielder has been tormented by injuries throughout his career, and having recovered from surgery on his ankle in the summer, has suffered another setback.

He missed Arsenal's 0 - 4 win at Wigan on Saturday after making his first League appearance of the season against Fulham on the 26th November. On the 2nd December, Wenger said:"It is a slight muscular problem, he'll be out for around 10 days."

However, the Arsenal boss is confident that despite Diaby's problems, he will return better than ever to fulfil the flattering description on the clubs website, as Wenger said of the 25 year-old's thigh strain:

"He is currently not fine. He has made so much effort to get back. I was afraid he would never be back to his best, but now I am convinced he will find his full potential again."
It is true that when fit, Diaby can be an important part of Arsenal's midfield, and considering he cost only £2 million in 2006, he has been something of a bargain for the club. However, his proneness to injuries have meant that he rarely completes a full season of football, averaging just 18 League appearances a season in his six seasons with Wenger's side.

3 Arsenal Stars "On The Edge"

Arsenal's 1 - 1 draw against Fulham on Saturday was the first time Wenger's side have not gained maximum points in a game since the start of October. Their gain in form has been exceptional when the horrible start to the season is considered, and Wenger will be delighted with the "spirit" and "character" which he is known for emphasising that the winning streak has instilled into his side.

However, in football, it is never an easy road to success, and having played three competitive games in just seven days, a number of key Arsenal players are running on empty with a massive fixture against Manchester City in the Carling Cup just two days away. Wenger said:

"We have a few players on the edge like Van Persie and Walcott, who had a hamstring alert, and Ramsey. We’ll have to see how they respond to 24 hours rest."

“It will be easier for you to pick the Man City team because you can look in the stand and on the bench [against Liverpool] and you will see who plays on Tuesday. We have red alerts on a few players but I will pick as strong a team as I can.”
City have such a big squad that rotation will not be too big an issue despite having themselves suffered a gruelling week which included Champions League football - something new to them. For Arsenal however, rotating and still having a team strong enough to compete may come as a challenge, especially against the superstars of City.

For those Gunners worried that Wenger may put out a team of youngsters as he often does in Carling Cup ties; do not fear a repeat of the 8 - 2 mauling at the hand of Manchester United. The Arsenal manager will change his philosophy for this game in which a City team who have such richness in depth face a tired, possibly inexperienced Arsenal side. Wenger continued:

"I will change my philosophy a little bit. I’ve always said that I will play a team that has a chance to qualify. We will give them a game, don’t worry.”
The game is also likely to see the return of a certain player whom Arsenal fans may not take kindly to the sight of. Samir Nasri is certain to benefit from City's rotation policy having not featured heavily in the past few months, and will make his comeback to the Emirates; a place he was so desperate to leave in the summer. However, Wenger being Wenger, he would much rather the inevitable abuse aimed at his countryman not become an issue on Tuesday night, saying:

“You want to respect players who have played for us and that’s what we expect. It’s always more important to support our team than to be negative with the players from Man City. What is important is that we are united to win the game.”

Wenger "Will Die With Arsenal"

Arsene Wenger has been with Arsenal for 15 years, managed over 850 games, and won close to 500 of them. He is currently the clubs longest serving manager, and, based on the three Premier League trophies and four FA Cups, the most successful one too. However, as of late, he and his club have been experiencing something of a crisis; a summer in which their best players left, a disastrous start to the season, and the overbearing burden of the unfortunate but all to obvious fact that Arsenal are without a trophy in six years.

The 'crisis' now seems to be over, with the side unbeaten in their last nine matches in all competitions, with a striker in superb goalscoring form, and despite rumblings over the future of Arsene Wenger because of the aforementioned troubles, former Gunner Robert Pires believes the manager will be at the London club for life.

The retired French midfielder, who played under Wenger through their greatest ever season in which the side remained unbeaten to win the League of 2003/04, suggested he could hardly envisage Arsenal without Wenger and spoke of the so called crisis which rocked the Emirates early in their season:

“I think he will die with Arsenal. He is the same as Ferguson at Manchester United or Guy Roux at Auxerre. He will stay with Arsenal, that is my opinion, because Arsenal need him and he needs Arsenal. C’est l’amour.”

“It has calmed down now and things are more relaxed for Arsène. In August he lost three important players for the club in Nasri, Clichy and Fabregas and I think that was a shock for Wenger. And for the fans too, of course."

"Every club in England has a period of crisis. At the beginning it was Arsenal and now it is Chelsea. I remember the day after Man Utd had lost 6-1 to City when everyone was saying United were finished. That is football, especially when you play for the big teams.”
Pires joined Spanish side Villarreal after leaving Arsenal in 2006, and recently returned to the Premier League with Aston Villa, but throughout his time away from the club where he played 284 times and scored 84 goals, he has remained in contact with his former manager, and remains close.

Pires' comments will therefore give hope to those Wenger fans worried by his recent ambiguous comments about his future when he said: "We'll look at things at the end of this one [this season]. For me we're now talking short-term, it's obvious."

Wenger on Mertesacker's Defensive Struggles

Per Mertesacker is gaining a reputation at Arsenal, and so far, it isn't a good one. The German international has found it difficult in England so far and has been caught out on a number of occasions by the pace of the League, making some costly errors at the back which have not gone unnoticed.

This week-end he will have been counting his lucky stars that a man named Robin van Persie exists and plays up front for Arsenal, as he was able to cover up the calamitous blunder which saw Mertesacker gift the ball to Norwich's Steve Morison who gave the Canaries the lead. Van Persie grabbed a double to come from behind and win the three points, but it was another error which has Arsenal worried.

However, Arsene Wenger is well known for his unwavering faith in players whom he believes can improve, and the 27 year-old summer signing is no different. In fact, the French manager believes that he can learn from another defender who took some time to settle in at the Emirates; Laurent Koscielny. Wenger said:

“He had not completely recovered [fromthe internationals]. It is a different game in England, a very demanding gamefor the defender. In every second of the game you arereally tested with full commitment, and it takes some time to adapt."

“We have seen that with [Laurent]Koscielny, who played at right-back and was exceptional. Last year he would not have delivered this kind ofperformance because you learn that from fighting in every game. That is why itis so difficult to buy defenders from abroad.”
Arsenal have conceded only seven goals in their last 8 matches in all competitions - a vast improvement to the beginning of the season which saw them concede 8 in just one game against Manchester United at Old Trafford. The side are improving and growing in confidence with every game, but tightening up at the back and ironing out individual errors would go nicely with the sides recent form to propel them further up the table and add even more consistency to their play.

Arsenal Midfielder Considering Leaving

The last thing Arsenal want to be doing this winter is letting their best players go. Offers to take Robin van Persie away from the club seem inevitable, with Inter Milan and Real Madrid just a number of sides apparently preparing bids. However, Arsenal may face losing a player who is currently a lot less involved in first team proceedings like the club captain.

Francis Coquelin, Arsenal's 20 year-old defensive midfielder is giving serious thought to quitting the club during the January transfer window because of the "annoying" lack of first team football. He is frustrated that despite his season long loan to the French side FC Lorient last season to gain valuable experience, he has not been given enough of a chance so far with Arsenal.

The France Under 21 international has started just two games this year, with a total of five appearances, but he is not satisfied by his use by the London club. His performance at Old Trafford in Arsenal's humiliation at the hands of Manchester United was seen as a shining light among a number of awful performances - particularly defensively, but once player began to return from injury as well as the addition of Mikel Arteta to the side, first team opportunities have become scarce. He said:

"I thought I had a shot to play so I decided to stay at Arsenal. I played a lot at first, even big games, but when players came back from injury I just disappeared."

"It is often said that when you are young you have time but I played a whole season at Lorient and now I'm virtually not playing at all. It's annoying. Given my playing time for sure the idea of a departure this winter is in my head."
It is rare when players speak out against Arsene Wenger's decision making; the sides experienced Russian midfielder Andrei Arshavin confirmed as much when he said recently: "Wenger is a very strict manager… nobody at Arsenal even thinks to talk him into changes when it comes to football issues."

So Coquelin's quite public show of irritation of Wenger's decision making may not go down too well. However, it is, if viewed in a more positive light, a clear sign that the youngster is eager to play and confident enough to perform at the highest level. One thing is for sure; the next time he gets a first team place, he must prove he's worth it.

Arsenal Face Big January Bids for Van Persie

A look down the list of clubs supposedly preparing a January move for Arsenal striker Robin van Persie, and you will see the likes of Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Juventus and AC Milan. They are some of the biggest and most prestigious football clubs in Europe - but considering van Persie's sensational form in the Premier League, their interest is hardly surprising.

Arsenal without Robin van Persie at the moment would be a disaster; his 13 goals and 4 assists this season have carried Arsenal through number of difficult games which would have been lost or drawn in his absence. Keeping hold of the Dutchman is essential. These words will therefore give something for fans to cling ahold of as the January window draws nearer: "I am committed to Arsenal and that's how it is."

The words of Netherlands legend Marco van Basten will also give Arsenal hope that van Persie decides to sign a new Arsenal contract rather than move to another club. "Robin must not leave Arsenal," he said. "Arsenal have the most amazing stadium, they have a style of play, they have a beautiful shirt – in every way I consider Arsenal as the ultimate football club. It is the club where Robin belongs."

However, a number of reports have claimed that Arsenal must prepare themselves for inevitable bids for their star striker from Inter Milan in particular, whose new manager Claudio Ranieri, is looking for stronger attacking options having seen the side score only 2 goals at home so far this season. Inter sit a place above the relegation positions and desperately need to buck their ideas up, and hope to start with a few new January signings. But would van Persie really want to leave Arsenal  a side now going strong in the top half of the Premier League for Inter  a side struggling to keep their heads above the water in Serie A?

Arsene Wenger will surely not be accepting any offers for van Persie any time soon, so it is unlikely that a £25.8 million bid from Real Madrid would succeed in persuading him to rip the heartbeat from Arsenal's squad. Madrid may interest van Persie, but it remains unlikely, especially considering his exclamations of loyalty to the London club that he will be leaving this January.

He has 18 months remaining on his contact, and at 28 is at his peak - so it is only natural the interest in him is there. Unfortunately for anyone else, Wenger's and Arsenal's interest in selling him is nil, so bar a miracle, you can most definitely rule out any January move for now.

Manchester United to Sign Exciting Midfielder

Manchester United's uninspiring midfield has been exposed on several occasions this season, and despite the club sitting in a respectable second position, improvement is clearly needed.

While the signing of PSV's 15 year-old attacking midfielder, Andreas Pereira, is not the marquee signing many Manchester United fans would have liked to see added to the midfield, it is yet another building block that Sir Alex Ferguson has added to his magnificent Old Trafford empire, built over and over again throughout the past 25 years of unrivalled success.

United managed to steal the youngster from underneath a number of high profile clubs' noses, including Premier League rivals Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea as well as Italian giants, AC Milan. It seems Pereira, who was not able to sign a professional contract with PSV because of his young age, was impressed with the treatment he received from United, having several tours of Old Trafford as well as a meeting with Sir Alex himself. He said:

“I knew that PSV had given me my chance, but Manchester United is obviously a great club, other British clubs were interested. I thought about it, but Manchester United is a dream club for me. I have been a few times to Manchester United to have a look.”

“I got a tour and spoke with Sir Alex Ferguson. Being a 15-year-old and being able to talk with him is great!

Pereira is yet another promising young talent, described as the 'best in the world for his age,' who will no doubt be a huge part of a future United squad, slotting in alongside the likes of Paul Pogba, Ravel Morrison and Ryan Tunicliffe in United's exciting system filled with potential stars.

Manchester United have had to move the impressive Wayne Rooney into the middle to make up for the lack of central midfield prowess, especially in the absence of several key player including another youngster who has managed to rise to the top, Tom Cleverley. January will see the arrival of the Brazilian-born Belgian Pereira, but do not be surprised to see United linked to a number of more established central midfielder's too.

Man United's £26m Temporary New Midfielder

Sir Alex Ferguson missed out on the signing of Wesley Sneijder during the summer transfer window, deciding that Manchester United's significant record transfer fee of £30.5 million needn't be shattered for the sake of an established, attacking midfielder to replace the retired Paul Scholes. He did after all, have young midfielder's such as Tom Cleverley progressing encouragingly in the team, and the lifeline - if all else fails - of the convenient January transfer window to look forward to.

However, just as has occurred before during his astonishingly successful 25 years with Manchester United, Sir Alex was confronted with a tricky problem. With Cleverley and Carrick out with injury, and Darren Fletcher also missing, United's central midfield was desperately thin for the clubs Champions League group game against Otelul Galati. The solution? Wayne Rooney of course - who else?

Ferguson may not have signed a midfielder for over £30 million this summer, but seven summers ago, he paid Everton £25.6 million for the then 18 year-old English striker. 8 seasons, 335 games, 159 goals and an expensive but very effective hair transplant later, Rooney played an impressive and well rounded midfield role at Old Trafford, and one which he was happy to complete for the good of the team.

His passing was superb - both the range and the accuracy. He tracked back, just as he always has done, to help win the ball and begin attacks. He was calm and composed on the ball, finding a team mate with 88% of his 98 attempted passes throughout the game. It was in fact, statistically, one of the best midfield performance from a United central midfielder this season, which says a great deal about both the natural talents of Wayne Rooney and the current state of the United midfield.

Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed after the 2 - 0 win in which the second goal came about from a deflected Rooney shot, that his strikers new positioning was only a short term thing rather than a long term solution. Once Cleverley returns along with Carrick and Fletcher, and when Anderson finally decides to play consistently well rather than discouraging displays like his latest alongside Rooney, don't expect the striker to be occupying the middle of the park rather than creating and scoring goals up front.

It was refreshing to see a player with the talents of Rooney display his versatility and depth in a completely different role to what he is used to, but the 26 year-old is apparently more adept in this position than you might have thought. After the win which moves United into top position in their Champions League group, he revealed his central midfield history:

"I played there a lot when I was younger and it's something which means you get a lot of the ball and we had to defend at times as well tonight. The manager asked me to do it and I'm happy to do it. I've said before I feel I'm a good enough footballer to play anywhere on the pitch."

"I'm not being big-headed, I feel I am capable of doing that and if the manager wants me to play there, I've no problem doing that."
If only Rooney revealed that he has a twin brother who is a natural central midfield player. Two Rooney's in the Manchester United side wouldn't go amiss. Role on January.

Interest Grows in Manchester United Striker

It is looking increasingly likely that Manchester United will be at least one striker lighter this summer, as interest grows across Europe in Sir Alex Ferguson's £30.75 million signing 2008 summer signing, Dimitar Berbatov.

The Bulgarian was linked with a move to German side Schalke, with their Dutch striker supposedly set for a move in the other direction in some sort of player-swap deal, which I previously took a look at. Now, the 30 year-old is said to be a serious target of both Galatasaray and Valencia.

Both reports suggest that United would be prepared to sell Berbatov for a significantly less amount than which they paid a few years ago, with the Turkish media claiming Galatasaray would pay as little as £7 million, and Valencia just £10 million. A loss on the £30 million United paid was always inevitable, and with Berbatov's contract running out, a smaller fee is understandable.

Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus, Bayern Munich and even Inter Milan have all been linked with Berbatov, who is undoubtedly good enough for any of those sides. He is unfortunate in the sense that despite being at one of the biggest clubs in the world and being United's top goalscorer last season, he is among a number of extremely talented strikers, and is finding appearances hard to come by.

Wenger: No New Centre Back Signing Needed

Ten games into the Premier League season, and Arsenal sit in seventh position in the table - 10 points behind the leaders, Manchester City. Other than the obvious difference in the amount of points gathered by both teams, there is one other glaring divide between Arsene Wenger's side and Roberto Mancini's: goals conceded.

It is a fundamental rule of football; if you don't concede, you will not lose, but unfortunately for Arsenal, their defending from the very start of the season has been quite embarrassingly awful. At the Emirates, Wenger's side have conceded an acceptable amount of four goals in five game, but away from home, it has been a whole different story. In just five away matches, the Arsenal defence has conceded an astonishing 17 goals - eight of those coming at Old Trafford.

Compare those figures to the Premier League leaders', who have conceded just two at home and six away, and you can clearly see where Arsenal need improving if they want to at least break into those Champions League places. Tightening up that defence must be a priority for the team if they stand any chance of success this season - especially considering that they have already conceded almost half the amount of goals they did in the whole of last season (they have already let in 21 and allowed the opposition to score 43 last year).

However, Arsene Wenger is confident that the central defenders, who are now all back from varying problems are sufficient enough to help Arsenal to success. He believes that balance at the back is crucial, and he has finally found that balance with Per Mertesacker, Thomas Vermaelen and Laurent Koscielny, with Johan Djourou and Sebastian Squillaci also available if needed. He said:

"The balance is vital. I must say that all the three can play with each other. Koscielny and Vermaelen can play together and Mertesacker can play with Vermaelen and Koscielny. It gives us a bit of an opportunity to rotate a bit when needed and people are tired."

"Ideally, Vermaelen will play on the left [of the centre-back pair]. But Koscielny can play on the left as well so we have a good potential and balance there. I think that all the three can play at any moment, and we still have Djourou and Squillaci as well."

"People wanted us to buy a centre-back so much and then suddenly you realise we have plenty."
Arsenal fans will probably be hoping that injuries stay away from their back line for a while, with luck in that department very thin on the ground, having seen Vermaelen - a integral part of the defence hampered with injuries for a long, arduous period of time.

ARSENAL VS MARSIELLE - UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

ARSENAL VS MARSEILLE:

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Date: 1 November 2011
In the big match in the UEFA Champions League today we will have Asenal taking on Marseille side who will be hunting for the win at Emirates which seening Arsenal as playing some of the best football in country in the past month or so. Their performences has improved alot and they are winning games with ease and they will be very confident when they take on Marseille as they are coming into this match on the back of one of the biggest win agains their local rivals chelsea.

Arsenal are a team who tend to play better football, when they are given space and time and with their top players finding form just at the right time they are now one dangerous side as they keep on attacking all the time and that makes other team less effective on the other side of the pitch.

With the likes of Van Persie and Theo Walcot are in the form of their life and if they can keep the good run of form going it will be interesting to see how this match goes about. Marseille on the other hand are struggling in the league and also they lost against ARsean couple of weeks ago and they will be hoping to avoid such thing this time around.
