Manchester United 5-0 Wigan Highlights Goals Video 26 December 2011

On Monday afternoon we wil have Wigan Athletic traveling to face English Premier League defending Champions Manchester United in what will be a massive match between the two and its very important for United going into the new year. Their local rivals Manchester City are playing their game away from home and that gives United and oppertunity to take the lead at the top of the table if City drop points.

Wigan on the other hand are kind of a team who struggles against the big teams and on their previous few visits at Old Trafford they have been hammered all the time and that kind of looks all three points in the bag for United and I can tip Rooney and Nani to score in this one.

Wayne Rooney has kind of got his early season form back and now he is looking sharp infront of the goals which gives United a cutting edge going into the crucial period of the season. You can tune in here to get the live updates and the match highlights which will be available shortly before it all starts.

Wenger Considering Several Signings

While many will be unwrapping presents and digging into a generous helping of turkey and pudding on Christmas day, Arsenal's devoted manager will meticulously be going over and over in his mind who he should bring in to the London club during the January transfer window. He may not be very good company around the dinner table for the 25th, but come the 1st January, he could well have a vintage Thierry Henry to unwrap, and perhaps even a brand new left back in the form of Wayne Bridge, and the French manager will surely be a lot more satisfied and relaxed going into the new year. He may even be filled with enough festive cheer to spend some money.

Having no recognized left backs in his side at present is a headache cured only by the approaching January transfer window, with the similarly troublesome departures of Marouanne Chamkh and Gervinho to the African Cup of Nations also prompting Wenger to act in the market. He has Christmas day off thanks to Arsenal's boxing day fixture against being moved back to the 27th due to tube strikes, and will put it to good use with a period of thinking time.

His comments yesterday confirmed that he has already established players need to be brought into the club, and that they will most likely be short term loan deals simply to keep the squad strong in the face of current injuries. The thinking time set aside for the Arsenal manager is there for him to ponder on who specifically would be available and suitable for the job at hand. He said:

"It can only be a short-term solution for us because we have bought [Andre] Santos, we have Gibbs, we have [Thomas] Vermaelen who can play there, so we do not need a long-term solution."

"Long-term, I am sticking to Santos and Gibbs, I love both of them because they have a quality I like, which is to attack. I haven't made any enquiry yet [for Wayne Bridge], so for the moment not him or anyone else."
Manchester City's out of favour left-back, Wayne Bridge has been the one player rumoured as most likely, and as he is not needed at City having played only once this season, and forced to train with the youngsters rather than the first team, it is understandable if he wished to move to Arsenal for some action. However, Wenger has, as he emphasizes, time to decide on exact personnel.

Talk of Wenger attempting to turn back time and re-introduce club legend, Thierry Henry to the adoring Arsenal fans may yet turn into a reality, but again, Wenger needs to think about it and make the decision as to whether it would be beneficial to him to bring back the clubs all-time leading goalscorer to help Robin van Persie with his goal-getting duties. As is known, Henry is currently training with the London side while his current MLS side, the New York Red Bulls enjoy the end of their season. Wenger said yesterday:

"That's why I have Christmas Day off. I have to think about that. Short-term is ideal for us, but I haven't made any enquiry yet. Thierry is not here at the moment. It has never come up in conversation."

"The 1st of January is the vital date for us. We are at the 23rd of December today, so we have seven days to make decisions and I will make a decision in the next seven days on players. I promise you will know."
While Henry may be a popular option for Arsenal fans, and a big moral boost for the squad, some may prefer to remember the legend as exactly that - a player who was unrivaled in his time with the club, and that is something perhaps in Wenger's mind. Other more expensive options like Lukas Podolski who has also been linked to Arsenal recently would give the side an exceptional boost in quality but would damage Arsenal's bank balance - another thing on Wenger's mind.

Wenger will use Christmas to decide on Arsenal's transfer activity, and whether or not it will be a happy new year will rest upon those decisions. Bridge, Henry, Podolski, with murmurs of the French midfielder Johan Gourcuff being offered to Wenger. Who comes in and how much will be spent will be decided over Christmas dinner at Mr Wenger's house.

Wenger in the Market for a Full-Back

Arsene Wenger will search the transfer market for a full-back suitable for Arsenal this January in light of the injuries which have blighted the club in that position so far this season.

Injuries to Bacary Sagna, Andres Santos, Kieran Gibbs and Carl Jenkisnon - all full-backs - as well as an injury to Johan Djourou, a centre back whose versatility has been utilized in the full-back position, has forced Wenger's hand.

The Arsenal manager confirmed that if the situation with Kieran Gibbs worsens or does not improve, the likelihood of him delving into the market will increase, confirming that he has already started looking for new recruits, saying on Tuesday:

"It depends now on Gibbs. He sees a specialist again today and if something happens there that he has had a real setback then possibly, yes. It is not a shop, you just take a good opportunity that is on the market when you can. Overall that's what we are doing at the moment. We are starting to look at players if Gibbs is not back."
Already there are reports that Arsenal have their eye on former Chelsea left-back Wayne Bridge, who currently plays very sparingly - if not at all - for Manchester City. Arsenal are reportedly lining up a loan move for the 31 year-old English defender who recently had a spell out on loan with Championship side, West Ham United.

Bridge is hardly in the form of his life; he rarely plays with the City first team, having been restricted to only 1 first team appearance in the Carling Cup this season, and he trains with the youngsters rather than the actual squad. While any move for Bridge may be questioned by Arsenal fans, it is an understandably cheap and short term option which takes into account the possible return of the other Arsenal full-backs coming close to recovery.

However, at the present moment, Thomas Vermaelen, Laurent Koscielny and perhaps Sebastian Squillaci will be forced to play out of position, with the young midfielder Francis Coquelin, who has been complaining about his lack of use in the first team, also a possibility for Arsenal, but this is a huge inconveniance for the side tactically. Wenger explained:

"It's difficult because first of all we have centre-backs who do not like to play at full-back. We are a team who likes to go forward through the full-backs, so of course, they are in a position where they have to produce different games. That is much more demanding physically."

"That exposes us even more to injuries, so I try to rotate people – one time right-back, one time centre-back. I can use Sebastien Squillaci, I can use Ignasi Miquel, I can use Francis Coquelin. Let's be frank and honest, no solution will be ideal because whatever we do, two players will have to play out of position."
Arsenal travel to Villa Park on Wednesday evening, and a weaker defensive line is likely to be sent out, but because of injuries, and until the January transfer window, it is the only solution.

Manchester United 4-1 Wolverhampton Highlights Goals Video - December 2011

After a very difficult week where Manchester United saw themselve got out of the Champions League knock out stages as they were defeated by a very inspired FC basel side in the Wednesday night encounter and now they will be hoping to get back to winning ways and try to reduce the gap at the top of the table when they take on Wolves side. Usualy United do get back to winning ways after some disaster result but this United side is not only lacking so much creativity in the middle of the park but they are also struggling to cope as a good defensive United,.

Manchester United previous 7 matches they have been unable to play as the way they started their 2011-2012 season, they were scoring loads of goals and the fact that Wayne Rooney is totaly out of form is not helping the matters while the likes of Nani, Ashley Young and Hernandes who is out Injured are problem too with the form and fitness. on the other hand they lost their captain Namanja Vidic for 4 months which leaves gap at the back.

Wolverhampton will be eager to get out there and get somthing under their belt when they take on United at Old Trafford, Ofcource that is a touch match for them as they are playing away from home but looking at United's recent performecnes they will be going out there with more confidence than ever.

Below Par United Blown Away By Basel

Hands on hips, dejected shakes of the heads, and frustrated mutters under the breaths of Manchester United players - defeated in the Champions League as they watched their victors in envy, celebrating before them. Their muddy white away kits suggested that these players had battled to the very end for a win to ensure progression in this prestigious European competition - and they did battle, they did fight, they did attack for the required three points; just not anywhere near as well enough.

United travelled to Switzerland in the knowledge that a result was expected of them. A draw or a win would ensure qualification to the knock-out rounds, but this is Manchester United, and it was thought only the three points would do. They travel back to England with nothing but an overwhelming sense of disappointment, the uninspiring thought of playing in the Europa League, and their managers words no doubt ringing in their ears following his very likely forcefully loud diagnosis of their loss in the away dressing room at the end of the game.

"United thrive under pressure," we were told prior to the game by the clubs summer recruit, Phil Jones. Going by this result, clearly not, Phil. A goal behind after just nine minutes thanks to a bit of questionable goalkeeping from David de Gea meant Manchester United were chasing the game, and despite dominating the chances conceded another just before the end. A late United goal which squirmed agonizingly over the line was hardly a consolation for the lack of quality in finishing chances throughout the game; despite the high expectations and the typicality for United to grab late goals, the team failed to deliver, just as they have done throughout this seasons Champions League.

When Basel came to Old Trafford, United lost a two goal lead and came close to losing the game 2 - 3. If it wasn't for a late Ashley Young header, Sir Alex Ferguson and his team would have been out before last nights game even began. The fact that United's only two wins in the competition this year were against the previously unknown and in the end pointless side, Otelul Galati, suggests that the clubs chances of getting wins from the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid further into the competition were slim from the get-go.

Blame it on poor form, bad luck with injuries, awful finishing of chances, or just all round disappointing performances; all played their part, but looking back on the group stage now, there were so many missed opportunities and avoidable errors which rendered United complacent, off-guard, naive and wasteful. Progression wasn't deserved.

There have been too many blips in United's Champions League journey, and clearly there are a number of issues which need sorting out. However, at the present moment, United will have to concentrate on where they are left, and what they are left with - the Europa League. They are joined by Manchester City, who also failed to qualify despite gaining an impressive 10 points in an incredibly difficult group in comparison to United, and both Manchester clubs will surely be favorites for the 'crown' if they take it at all seriously.

An awful injury to the captain Nemanja Vidic was probably the biggest blow to the club in the short term and possibly long term, with his knee buckling horribly under pressure and at an awkward angle. There are fears it could be ligament damage with the Serbian being stretchered off in agony - yet another slice of bad luck for United's medical staff who are currently nursing three strikers and a few midfielders.

Luck has been on United's side before, but tonight, and recently, not much has gone the way of Ferguson's team. Second in the League they may be, but out of the Champions League (and Carling Cup) against opposition who, with respect, should be defeated is and cannot be good enough for the three time winners of the European Cup.

This loss is a reality check and a wake-up call. Breezing through the group stages is not an option. Taking your chances, winning games and building a solid team who can defend simple attacks as well as intricate ones is crucial. Unfortunately, this year, United seemed unprepared for the challenge, and they have been ruthlessly punished.

What Vidic's Injury Means for Manchester United

When Nemanja Vidic writhes around on the floor in pain, you know it's bad. He certainly isn't one to go down easy, to practise theatrics or to feign pain for a free-kick, and as he waved frantically to the bench, it was clear that this injury was a bad one.

The disturbing replays confirmed it, and today we have learned that the Serbian defender and Manchester United's incredibly influential captain has indeed suffered the horrible and much feared cruciate knee ligament rupture which, if true, could mean Vidic will miss the rest of Manchester United's season, with the usual recovery period of around nine months.

The injury has not been confirmed by United at the time of writing, but rather Vidic's agent, Silvani Martino. Sir Alex Ferguson did say after United's 2-1 loss to Basel that it looked like a medial-ligament injury, which would see Vidic out for around four months, but either way, the 30 year-old will miss a substantial chunk of the Champions' wavering season.

So what will be done to make up for such an important players long term absence? The immediate reaction would be to look to the January transfer window for comfort. Ferguson is not known for his overly active winters in the market, but surely he will make an exception for an extraordinary event such as this. Out of the Champions League at the Group stages, desperately lacking the creative edge in midfield of recent years, an injury crisis up front and the captain out for the rest of the season. Luck hasn't been kind in this respect.

There are a number of possibilities to entertain. Firstly, Ferguson could buy a Vidic replacement. Easier said than done, indeed. Chelsea's Alex springs to mind as a short term man for the job, considering his transfer request and wish to escape London. He has experience in the Premier League and knows what it's like to play in a rotating back line, having played with a number of defenders in his time with Chelsea. However, Sir Alex has a healthy number of central defenders who could step into the position rendering movement in the transfer window needless.

Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans can partner Rio Ferdinad, providing he stays fit, however with this possible solution, further problems arise. Smalling is covering at right back in the absence of a regular player iN that position thanks to Rafael and Fabios consistent injury troubles, while Phil Jones is currently being utilised in the midfield in the absence of a powerful enforcer of play. That leaves just Jonny Evans.

With respect to Evans, he is no Vidic. He is a very good defender when he is on his game, but a number of times - perhaps too many times - he has made crucial mistakes which have opened him up to heavy criticism within United's broad fan base. A partnership with Ferdinand, who himself is not consistently solid or fit is not a title challenging partnership, and there lies a real issue for Ferguson to address.

Indeed, when Tom Cleverley returns with Carrick, Fletcher and Anderson, United's midfield will hopefully not require Phil Jones, giving United another option at the back, but what guarantee is there that the midfield is good enough to keep up with the likes of Manchester City's in the frantic chase for the title? It hasn't been awe inspiring so far, and quite simply, there are none.

The problem is, Sir Alex Ferguson did not recruit a central midfielder when Paul Scholes retired at the end of last season. It has left United light in the midfield, and with awfully bad luck with injuries, this lack of depth in the midfield have been exposed for all to see. Rooney has had to play in midfield, as has Phil Jones, with Ashley Young forced to play centrally a number of times. Giggs too has come inside, although that is more to do with his diminishing pace out on the wing - but all rotation like this leaves other positions light too.

Now without another vital player in Vidic for the rest of the season, Manchester United's team looks further diminished. Players are and will play out of position, and more injuries will be picked up between now and the end of the season. A midfield recruit this winter to me, should certainly be a high priority on Sir Alex Ferguson's to-do list.

There are too many ifs and buts, and not enough guarantees. United have already been punished for complacency and are out of the Champions League because of it. It would be naive of Ferguson not to use this upcoming transfer window to his advantage: to inject new life, new energy and new talent into his side which it desperately needs. If anything is for certain, it is that Manchester United need a boost, and one or two January signings will go some way in providing that.

Another Injury In the Arsenal Midfield

Arsenal's official website notes, "When he's fit and firing on all cylinders, [he] is one of Arsenal's most dynamic players." It is just unfortunate then, that Abou Diaby, Arsenal's "dynamic" French midfielder has been tormented by injuries throughout his career, and having recovered from surgery on his ankle in the summer, has suffered another setback.

He missed Arsenal's 0 - 4 win at Wigan on Saturday after making his first League appearance of the season against Fulham on the 26th November. On the 2nd December, Wenger said:"It is a slight muscular problem, he'll be out for around 10 days."

However, the Arsenal boss is confident that despite Diaby's problems, he will return better than ever to fulfil the flattering description on the clubs website, as Wenger said of the 25 year-old's thigh strain:

"He is currently not fine. He has made so much effort to get back. I was afraid he would never be back to his best, but now I am convinced he will find his full potential again."
It is true that when fit, Diaby can be an important part of Arsenal's midfield, and considering he cost only £2 million in 2006, he has been something of a bargain for the club. However, his proneness to injuries have meant that he rarely completes a full season of football, averaging just 18 League appearances a season in his six seasons with Wenger's side.
